Trump TERMINATES Trade Talks with Canada Over Reagan Ad Controversy
UPDATE: President Donald Trump has just announced the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, escalating tensions between the two nations. This shocking move comes in response to an ad campaign featuring a critical speech by former President Ronald Reagan regarding tariffs, which has sparked outrage from the Trump administration.
In a statement on his Truth Social media platform late Thursday, Trump emphasized the importance of tariffs to U.S. national security and the economy. He declared, “TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
Ties between these close allies have been increasingly strained, particularly under the Trump administration, which has faced backlash over its tariff policies. The severed negotiations were initially aimed at restoring stability to a partnership that has been rocked by disputes.
The controversy ignited when the Ontario government launched a new ad campaign, reportedly costing $53.5 million, featuring Reagan’s words criticizing Trump’s tariffs. The ad includes excerpts from Reagan’s April 25, 1987, radio address, in which he warns against the long-term detrimental effects of trade barriers on American workers and consumers.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended the campaign, stating, “Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together.”
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute responded, stating that Ontario did not seek permission to use Reagan’s remarks and is currently evaluating its legal options regarding the advertising content.
This rapid escalation in trade tensions is notable, as the negotiations Trump has abruptly ended were seen as a potential avenue for mending relations and addressing ongoing disputes. As the situation develops, observers will be watching closely to see how this decision impacts the economies of both nations and their future diplomatic relations.
