University of Louisville Launches Swift-Inspired Economics Class
URGENT UPDATE: The University of Louisville just announced an innovative new course titled “Swiftonomics,” designed to teach economics through the lens of pop icon Taylor Swift. This groundbreaking class will explore economic concepts by analyzing aspects of Swift’s career, such as her record-breaking concert ticket prices and the trade-offs fans face in attending her events.
Starting this semester, students will engage with economic theories while discussing questions already buzzing among Swifties. “She’s had a huge economic impact. She’s an incredible business person. And so we thought, well, let’s try this,” stated Beth Munnich, associate professor of economics and course developer, in an interview with WMUR-TV.
The course is currently being offered as a one-off, but Munnich aims to make it a permanent fixture if student interest proves strong. This unique approach to learning isn’t isolated to Louisville; other institutions have previously leveraged Taylor Swift’s influence for educational purposes.
In 2023, Stanford University launched “All Too Well (Ten Week Version),” which delved into the artist’s 2012 song. Meanwhile, the University of Texas at Austin offered “The Taylor Swift Songbook,” where students compared Swift’s lyrics to classic literature. Canada’s Queen’s University even featured “Taylor Swift’s Literary Legacy” as part of its Cultural Studies program.
Additionally, New York University’s Clive Davis Institute introduced a course on Swift’s evolution as both an artist and entrepreneur in 2022. As for the University of Louisville, there is no word yet if “Swiftonomics” will include discussions about Swift’s upcoming docuseries and concert film set to premiere on Disney+.
This class represents a fresh and engaging way to learn about economics, using relatable examples from the music industry to connect with students. With Taylor Swift’s immense popularity and economic impact, “Swiftonomics” is sure to resonate with a generation eager to understand the financial world through a familiar lens.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting educational development, as students gear up to earn college credits in what may be one of their wildest dreams.
