Urgent Alert: Northern Liberties Residents Targeted in TikTok Scam
Residents of Northern Liberties in Philadelphia are on high alert as they suspect they have fallen victim to a disturbing TikTok scam. Since September 2023, at least 20 young women have reportedly knocked on the door of local resident Jearold Hersey, seeking hair appointments through a TikTok account named “Nariah the Hairstylist.”
“This is freaking my son out,” Hersey expressed, emphasizing the fear that has gripped his family. Concern spirals as these women arrive at his home, believing they are responding to legitimate postings on social media. The alleged scheme has left residents unnerved, unsure of who is arriving at their door.
According to Hersey, these young women claim they were instructed to send a $25 deposit via Cash App before receiving the actual address of the appointment, which turned out to be his residence. “It’s kind of nerve-racking because you don’t really know who is coming to the door,” he said, highlighting the emotional toll this has taken on his family and the community.
In response to these alarming events, neighbors have taken proactive measures by posting warnings on their doors, alerting others that their addresses have been compromised in this scam. “Sometimes people see the sign and go away, and sometimes they bang on the door,” Hersey reported, a testament to the chaotic scenes unfolding at their homes.
Action News reached out to the TikTok number associated with the scheme. The individual on the line confirmed they would provide a location after receiving the deposit but abruptly hung up when pressed about the legitimacy of the operation.
Hersey is calling for others to be vigilant. “I really want them to get caught in all honesty. This isn’t cool. It’s not fair to the people, not just the people who are getting ripped off for money; we feel unsafe as well,” he stated. He has also reported the TikTok page to the platform, urging swift action against the alleged fraud.
Local authorities, including the Philadelphia Police, are advising anyone affected by this scam to file a report. As this situation develops, residents are urged to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.
This unfolding story serves as a critical reminder of the dangers that can lurk in the digital age, where scams can quickly escalate, impacting the safety and security of communities. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and spread awareness to prevent further victimization.
