Urgent Update: Experts Reveal Daily Foot Washing is Crucial

UPDATE: New reports confirm that billions of bacteria thrive on your feet, making daily foot washing essential for keeping your feet healthy. Experts emphasize that many people overlook this critical aspect of personal hygiene, especially in the humid environment created by closed-toe shoes.

According to Dr. Tanya Nino, a dermatologist with Providence St. Joseph Medical Heritage Group, the soles of our feet contain 600 sweat glands per square centimeter, more than any other part of the body. “When you get over-moisture or over-occlusion of the eccrine skin on the hands and feet, that’s when the skin can get macerated,” Nino said. This condition can lead to an overgrowth of harmful fungi and yeast, particularly in the warm, damp area between the toes.

With many people, like Krystal Malhotra, a nurse who is on her feet for 10 to 12 hours a day, wearing closed shoes, foot hygiene becomes even more crucial. “I start at the top, then I do the bottom, then I go in between the toes every day,” Malhotra shared, emphasizing her commitment to foot care.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that Americans wash their feet daily, but Dr. Nino advises that for most people, a daily rinse is sufficient. “Some soaps can be harsh and can strip the skin of your natural skin barrier, so I don’t really advocate for soaping everything down,” she stated. However, those with conditions like diabetes must pay extra attention to foot hygiene to prevent infections from unnoticed cuts.

Experts stress that it’s just as important to ensure your feet are completely dry after washing, as moisture can promote bacterial growth. Despite not needing to wash her feet daily, Malhotra insists on doing so because she fears developing unpleasant foot odor. “I’m so scared of getting stinky feet!” she exclaimed.

As this information spreads, it’s vital for everyone to consider their foot hygiene practices. With millions of people potentially at risk for foot-related health issues, the call for awareness and proactive care has never been more urgent.
