UPDATE: UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is facing a serious health crisis following a catastrophic eye poke during his title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on October 21, 2023. Aspinall, just 32, was rushed to the hospital after the bout was declared the first no contest in UFC title fight history due to the accidental fouls in the first round.

In a troubling update shared by his father and head coach, Andy Aspinall, the champion is reportedly unable to see out of his right eye. “It’s not good,” Andy said in a video posted on Aspinall’s YouTube channel. “His right eye, he can’t see anything. It’s just gray.”

Doctors conducted vision tests, revealing that Aspinall’s left eye is only functioning at 50 percent. “He went about four letters down the chart and then he couldn’t see letters,” Andy detailed, emphasizing the severity of his son’s condition. The team is currently undergoing additional tests to assess long-term damage.

While Andy confirmed that Tom avoided any “bone damage,” the situation remains precarious. Aspinall has yet to release an official statement since the fight, but his distress was evident in the Octagon immediately afterward.

The UFC is reportedly planning to rebook the matchup between Aspinall and Gane, according to UFC CEO Dana White. However, the timeline for this rebooking will depend heavily on the outcomes of the ongoing medical assessments.

“Hopefully it will be alright,” Andy expressed, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding Tom’s recovery. “But it might not be.”

As the sports world watches closely, fans and fellow fighters alike are hoping for a swift and full recovery for the heavyweight champion. This developing story remains urgent, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
