Urgent Warning: AI ‘Homeless Man Prank’ Sparks 911 Calls
UPDATE: An alarming new TikTok trend, dubbed the “AI homeless man prank,” is causing panic and widespread confusion, prompting urgent 911 calls across multiple states. This dangerous prank utilizes artificial intelligence to create hyper-realistic videos of a fabricated “homeless man” appearing to invade people’s homes, leading to real-life emergencies.
Authorities report that police departments in at least four states, including Michigan and New York, have received numerous emergency calls from terrified residents believing they are experiencing home intrusions. The West Bloomfield Police near Detroit confirmed they have responded to multiple incidents where the supposed intruder turned out to be a digitally manipulated creation.
The Yonkers Police Department expressed their frustration in a recent Facebook post, highlighting the risks involved when officers respond rapidly to these false alarms. “Officers are responding FAST using lights-and-sirens to what sounds like a call of a real intruder — and only getting called off once everyone realizes it was a joke,” they stated. “That’s not just a waste of resources; it’s a real safety risk for officers and families.”
This trend showcases how easily AI technology can be misused. Greg Gogolin, a professor and director of cyber security at Ferris State University, illustrated the simplicity of creating these deceptive videos. He noted that in just a few hours, he developed a program capable of generating realistic images through advanced face-swapping techniques.
Once a technology like this emerges, its potential for misuse escalates quickly. “People without any technical background can then utilize that the way they wish,” Gogolin warned, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and training among law enforcement.
While the technology has improved significantly, making it harder to detect AI-generated images, there are still telltale signs. “You might notice anomalies, like an arm in the wrong position or other distorted features,” Gogolin explained. However, as AI continues to evolve, these discrepancies are becoming less frequent.
The urgency surrounding this prank cannot be overstated. As authorities continue to receive reports of these incidents, the public is urged to remain vigilant. The ramifications of such pranks extend beyond wasted police resources; they pose real dangers to families and emergency responders alike.
As this situation develops, experts stress the importance of equipping law enforcement with advanced training in digital forensics and cyber security. Currently, there is a significant gap in the number of investigators with relevant backgrounds at local and state levels.
Stay tuned for updates on this emerging trend and its implications for public safety and law enforcement. The message is clear: think before you share or participate in such pranks, as the consequences can be far-reaching and severe.
