UPDATE: Nearly the entire U.S. coastline is under urgent weather alerts as the National Weather Service (NWS) warns of hazardous conditions due to a strong low-pressure system. The alerts, which span from the Northeast to the West Coast, are not related to Hurricane Melissa, NWS meteorologist Alec Butner confirmed.

WHAT TO KNOW: A series of storm systems are prompting critical advisories across the nation. On the East Coast, a powerful storm is expected to create dangerous coastal conditions into the weekend, while northwesterly winds are causing perilous ocean conditions along the West Coast. Alerts include small craft advisories, high surf advisories, coastal flood warnings, and rip current statements.

Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water. NWS Los Angeles cautioned, “Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers.” The warnings highlight the increased risk of ocean drowning, as rip currents may pull swimmers and surfers out to sea.

On the East Coast, coastal flooding is imminent. “A strong storm system is expected to bring strong winds, locally heavy rainfall, and widespread minor coastal flooding,” NWS Mount Holly posted. The storm is set to peak on Thursday, October 12, with a brief lull in conditions overnight before winds strengthen again on Friday, October 13.

In the Gulf, the NWS office in Houston issued a low water advisory, stating, “Winds and bay waters are gradually improving from previous gale conditions, but will remain hazardous to small craft through much of the morning.” Small craft advisories stretch from Louisiana to Florida, warning mariners of potential dangers.

IMPACT: These alerts are crucial for public safety, emphasizing the importance of heeding official warnings. NWS San Francisco stressed that “inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.”

As these weather systems continue to develop, the alerts will expire at different times. Many flood-related warnings in the Northeast are set to end this evening, while ocean-related warnings along the West Coast last through the weekend. Residents in affected areas are urged to follow guidance from local weather officials and emergency management.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Prepare for potential rising water levels and take appropriate action to protect life and property. The NWS Mount Holly emphasized, “A Coastal Flood Warning means that moderate or major tidal flooding is occurring or imminent.”
