Israel has confirmed the identification of the remains of another hostage returned by Hamas, named Eliyahu Margalit. The 76-year-old’s body was identified on Saturday by the National Center for Forensic Medicine, following his abduction during a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Margalit was taken from the horse stables where he worked in Kibbutz Nir Oz. His identification marks the tenth returned body of a hostage since a ceasefire began over a week ago.

The Prime Minister’s Office announced that Margalit’s family has been notified, providing them with a measure of solace amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the fate of the remaining 18 hostages. The hostage forum, which supports families of abducted individuals, emphasized its commitment to holding weekly rallies until all remains are returned.

Hamas, while continuing to search for more bodies under the rubble in the Gaza Strip, is also calling for increased humanitarian aid to the region. The group stated that the retrieval of bodies is complicated by the extensive devastation and dangerous unexploded ordnance in affected areas. Some bodies are reportedly located in territories controlled by Israeli forces.

Escalating Violence in Gaza

As the search for hostages continues, violence persists in Gaza. On Friday, the Civil Defense agency, operating under the Hamas-run Interior Ministry, reported that nine Palestinians, including women and children, were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza City. The agency claimed that the vehicle carrying the victims was struck after it crossed into an Israeli-controlled area.

In response, the Israeli Army stated that it had observed a “suspicious vehicle” approaching its troops and had fired warning shots. The army maintained that its actions were consistent with the terms of the ceasefire. The Civil Defense criticized Israel for not providing a non-lethal warning to the civilians in the vehicle.

The ongoing violence has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the ceasefire, which is intended to facilitate the exchange of hostages’ remains and allow for humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Response

Hamas has urged mediators to expedite the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and facilitate reconstruction efforts in the battered territory. Aid deliveries remain hampered by continued closures and restrictions, with only 339 trucks having been distributed in Gaza since the ceasefire began. According to the agreement, approximately 600 humanitarian aid trucks are expected to enter the region daily.

Data from the Israeli defense body overseeing aid, known as COGAT, indicated that around 950 trucks, including commercial and bilateral deliveries, crossed into Gaza on Thursday. Despite this, the humanitarian situation remains dire. The United Nations has reported more than 2 million people in Gaza are in desperate need of assistance, with famine declared in Gaza City. The UN has also verified over 400 deaths due to malnutrition-related causes, including more than 100 children.

Israel has defended its actions by claiming that it has allowed sufficient food supplies into Gaza, alleging that Hamas has diverted much of the aid. This assertion has been disputed by the UN and various humanitarian organizations.

Israeli military actions in Gaza have reportedly resulted in the deaths of nearly 68,000 Palestinians, according to figures released by the Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government. These figures are considered reliable by many independent experts and UN agencies, although Israel has disputed them without providing an alternative count. Thousands more individuals are unaccounted for, as reported by the Red Cross.

The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a resolution that addresses both the humanitarian crisis and the ongoing hostilities in the region.
