CU Buffs Battle Hard but Fall Short Against Kansas State
The Colorado Buffaloes concluded their 2023 football season with a competitive performance against the Kansas State Wildcats, ultimately losing 24-14 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on December 2, 2023. Despite entering the game as significant underdogs, the Buffaloes showcased their resilience before finishing the season with a record of 3-9 overall and 1-8 in the Big 12 Conference.
Kansas State improved its record to 6-6 and secured bowl eligibility with the victory. The Wildcats relied heavily on the exceptional performance of running back Joe Jackson, who rushed for 142 yards and scored three touchdowns on 25 carries. His contributions were pivotal, particularly during a crucial 75-yard scoring drive late in the game.
The contest began with Kansas State asserting dominance, executing a methodical 13-play, 74-yard drive that culminated in a 4-yard touchdown run by Jackson. This drive set the tone early as the Wildcats took a 7-0 lead. Colorado’s response was met with challenges; a field goal attempt from Alejandro Mata was blocked, leaving the Buffaloes searching for momentum.
Despite these setbacks, CU’s defense rose to the occasion, forcing two three-and-outs and a fourth-down stop near midfield led by Keaten Wade. The Buffaloes managed to find their rhythm late in the first half, with quarterback Kaidon Salter connecting with Omarion Miller for a significant 38-yard pass. This set up Micah Welch‘s 1-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 7-7 just before halftime.
The second half began with promise for Colorado as they advanced to the Kansas State 34-yard line. However, the Buffaloes could not convert on a fourth-and-short, allowing the Wildcats to regain control. Kansas State capitalized on this opportunity when quarterback Avery Johnson led a drive, culminating in another touchdown by Jackson, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 14-7.
As the game progressed, Kansas State managed to increase its lead to 17-7 with a 35-yard field goal by Luis Rodriguez in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, Colorado responded with determination. Salter orchestrated a 75-yard drive, highlighted by a 43-yard connection with Miller. Welch once again found the end zone, bringing the Buffaloes within three points at 17-14.
With just over two minutes remaining, Kansas State executed a decisive nine-play, 75-yard drive, where Jackson scored his final touchdown, sealing the game at 24-14. Colorado’s efforts to mount a comeback in the closing moments fell short, concluding their season on a five-game losing streak.
The challenging season has led to discussions about the future of the program under head coach Deion Sanders. The Buffaloes will look to regroup and address the shortcomings highlighted throughout the season as they prepare for the upcoming year.
