Urgent Health Care Deal Could Impact 22 Million Americans by Year-End
UPDATE: Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., are racing against the clock to finalize a critical health care deal before the end of the year, as millions of Americans face soaring healthcare costs. The Affordable Care Act credits established during the COVID-19 pandemic are set to expire, potentially doubling premiums for 22 million Americans if no action is taken.
California Reps. Kevin Kiley and Sam Liccardo have just introduced the “Fix It Act”, a proposed measure that aims to extend these essential subsidies for an additional two years. Kiley emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “On average, people’s healthcare premiums will double. Independent contractors, small business owners, and retirees not yet eligible for Medicare are the ones who will be affected, and I’m not willing to just do nothing.”
As the clock ticks down to the December 31 deadline, the political landscape grows increasingly tense. Just before the holiday, former President Donald Trump reportedly contemplated a plan that aligns with Kiley and Liccardo’s proposal, although he has expressed reluctance to extend the credits. Kiley insists that swift action is crucial: “We need to act with a sense of urgency here. This is not just about extending credits; it’s about addressing a broader health care affordability crisis.”
The pressure mounts as House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to provide a timeline for when the measure could be brought to a vote. Kiley anticipates the Senate could vote on an extension by December 12, 2023. “Hopefully, the Speaker will understand this is a priority for the members and a priority for the American people,” he stated.
With the stakes higher than ever, the potential impact of this proposal is enormous. Millions of Americans could see their health care costs skyrocketing if lawmakers fail to reach an agreement. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated, as families and individuals across the nation await clarity on their health care futures.
As developments unfold, stay tuned for live updates on this critical issue that affects millions. For further insights, watch the full interview with Rep. Kevin Kiley on “California Politics 360,” airing Sundays at 8:30 a.m. on KCRA 3.
