Nicolas Sarkozy Begins Five-Year Prison Sentence Today
URGENT UPDATE: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to report to La Santé prison in Paris today, July 16, 2023, to begin a five-year prison sentence for criminal conspiracy linked to his 2007 election campaign financing. This historic moment marks the first time in living memory that a former French president will serve time behind bars.
Sarkozy was convicted for utilizing Libyan funds to finance his campaign, a decision that has caused significant public outcry. While he maintains his innocence and plans to appeal, a Paris judge ruled that Sarkozy must begin serving his sentence immediately due to the “seriousness of the disruption to public order caused by the offense.”
As he prepares to enter prison, Sarkozy has indicated that he expects to be placed in solitary confinement for security reasons, although he may also be housed in the prison’s “vulnerable” section, often referred to as the VIP section. Inmates there include high-profile figures from history, such as Capt. Alfred Dreyfus and notorious militant Carlos the Jackal.
In a statement to Le Figaro, Sarkozy expressed his determination: “I’m not afraid of prison. I’ll hold my head high, including in front of the doors of La Santé. I’ll fight till the end.” He has prepared a prison bag containing clothes and ten family photos, as well as three books, including The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, reflecting his resilience and literary interests.
In a show of familial support, one of Sarkozy’s sons, Louis Sarkozy, has called for a rally in support of his father in their upscale Paris neighborhood this morning. This public demonstration highlights the emotional impact of Sarkozy’s imprisonment on his family and supporters.
La Santé prison, a facility that has been fully renovated in recent years, has a long history of housing notable inmates. Former inmates have described the challenges of adapting to prison life, emphasizing that Sarkozy will face the same realities as any other inmate.
As the day unfolds, the situation continues to develop, and all eyes will be on how Sarkozy navigates this unprecedented chapter in his life. His legal team remains poised to challenge the conviction, but for now, the former president is preparing to face his new reality behind bars.
