Jeremiah Smith Becomes First College Athlete on Red Bull Can
COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a significant milestone for collegiate athletics, Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State University has become the first college athlete to be featured on a limited-edition can of Red Bull. Announced on March 13, 2024, this achievement highlights the growing influence of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals in American sports.
Smith’s unveiling was made memorable by a surprise visit from former NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, who assisted in presenting the news to the young athlete. Johnson visited Smith in Columbus on March 11, where he gifted him a football-style Matryoshka doll. As Smith opened a series of oversized footballs, he ultimately revealed the Red Bull can adorned with his image.
“It’s truly a blessing for me to be the first collegiate athlete to grace a can of Red Bull,” Smith expressed in a statement released by the company. “I can’t thank them enough for all the thought that went into the can.”
Celebrating Achievement and Career Highlights
The special edition can features various nods to Smith’s impressive football career. Notably, it includes a route line from his 56-yard catch that played a crucial role in securing Ohio State’s ninth national title in January 2024. Johnson remarked on the significance of this moment for Smith, stating, “I don’t think he realizes just yet how special this is. Understanding where you come from, to where you are now, all the work you’ve put in, it’s all paying off.”
Johnson emphasized that being featured on a can from a global brand like Red Bull is a testament to Smith’s dedication and hard work. “To grace the can of Red Bull, a global company, it’s a testament to all the work he has put in up to this point. Hell, I’m happy and I’m not even on the can,” he added.
Smith’s Rising Star in College Football
Since beginning his collegiate career, Smith has made a significant impact on the field. In his freshman year, he recorded 76 receptions for 1,315 yards. This season, he has continued to impress, amassing 49 receptions for 602 yards so far. His performance has positioned him as one of the standout players in college football, further enhancing his visibility and marketability.
The collaboration between Smith and Red Bull marks a notable trend in collegiate athletics, where student-athletes are increasingly able to leverage their personal brands for commercial opportunities. As the landscape of college sports evolves, the recognition of athletes like Smith reflects the changing dynamics of sponsorship and athlete representation.
This milestone not only highlights Smith’s individual achievements but also serves as a broader commentary on the opportunities available to collegiate athletes in today’s sports environment.
