Mark Wahlberg’s earlier war film, Lone Survivor, has recently been eclipsed at the global box office by One Battle After Another, a new release starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film has achieved significant commercial success, grossing approximately $160 million worldwide, including around $60 million in the domestic market.

Wahlberg, known for his work in streaming projects such as Play Dirty and the upcoming The Family Plan 2, previously collaborated with Anderson on the critically acclaimed films Deepwater Horizon, Patriots’ Day, and Mile 22. Their initial partnership began with Lone Survivor, which centered on a real-life Navy SEAL operation during the Afghanistan War. Released in 2013, the film garnered mostly positive reviews, achieving a “certified fresh” rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Since its debut, One Battle After Another has outperformed Lone Survivor, which had a lifetime global haul of $155 million. It has also surpassed the earnings of DiCaprio’s previous film, Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese. One Battle After Another is now considered a front-runner for the Best Picture award at the upcoming Academy Awards, unless competition arises from films like Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet.

Success and Reception of One Battle After Another

The film, described as the most expensive project of Anderson’s career, has earned over twice the amount of his previous work, There Will Be Blood. Critics have lauded it with a remarkable 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating widespread acclaim. The film blends action and drama, focusing on the complexities of combat and survival in modern warfare, appealing to audiences and critics alike.

In contrast, Lone Survivor was nominated for two Academy Awards, both in the sound categories. While it achieved recognition for its portrayal of military bravery, One Battle After Another is currently positioned to compete for more prestigious accolades.

As both films highlight different aspects of warfare, their box office performances reflect a changing landscape in cinema, where audiences lean towards stories that resonate with current themes and narratives.

Wahlberg and DiCaprio previously shared the screen in The Departed, a film that won the Best Picture Oscar. As both actors continue to evolve their careers, it remains to be seen how their future projects will fare in an increasingly competitive industry.
