St. Dominic Catholic School in Kingsport marked its 80th anniversary on September 27, 2023, celebrating a legacy of faith and education that began with three Sisters of Mercy teaching just 25 children in a single building. The milestone event, titled “Mass & Memories,” brought together parishioners, alumni, and families to honor eight decades of commitment to learning and spiritual development.

The celebration commenced with a Vigil Mass at 17:30, led by Bishop Mark Beckman of the Diocese of Knoxville. He was joined by Father Michael Cummins, pastor of St. Dominic, alongside fellow clergy including Father Anselm Edu and Father Bede Aboh. Music for the liturgy was provided by Dana Bellino, an alumna and current music teacher, along with the school choir. Students and alumni participated actively in the service, contributing as readers and altar servers, culminating in a heartfelt song performed by all present students.

Following the Mass, attendees moved to the school campus for light refreshments and a timeline wall chronicling significant milestones in the school’s history. Guests shared personal anecdotes through memory cards and video recordings, creating a vibrant tapestry of experiences that highlight the impact St. Dominic has had on their lives.

A Legacy Rooted in Faith and Service

The establishment of St. Dominic Catholic School is closely tied to the history of Kingsport itself. The first Catholic Mass in the area was celebrated in 1914 by Father John Callahan, affectionately known as “The Horseback Priest,” who served small communities throughout the region. By 1945, the Catholic community had expanded sufficiently to establish a parish and school, with the Sisters of Mercy entrusted with its administration.

The original school building opened in 1945, accommodating just 25 pupils. In 1951, a new brick building was dedicated, signaling the first of several expansions. Over the years, the institution adapted to various challenges, including cultural shifts and the COVID-19 pandemic, while remaining committed to its mission of nurturing the hearts and minds of children.

“Our school is a ministry of the Church,” said Father Cummins. “It has consistently been the voice of Jesus, connecting with people and inspiring them to grow closer to God.”

Continuing a Living Mission

Today, St. Dominic Catholic School serves preschool through grade 5, offering a rigorous academic curriculum intertwined with Catholic values. Students participate in Mass twice a week and engage in community service projects that enhance their faith and connection to the local community.

Principal Bonnie Saleh expressed, “The strength of our school lies in our closeness as a community. It’s a place where children are recognized as individuals, where faith is part of daily life, and where everyone—students, teachers, or parents—feels valued.”

Beth Barnette, director of development and admissions, added, “St. Dominic has always been more than a school. It’s a community where hearts are formed and faith is lived out loud.” She emphasized that the Mass & Memories event reminded all attendees that, despite changes over the years, the spirit of St. Dominic remains unwavering—faithful, generous, and hopeful.

As St. Dominic Catholic School embarks on its 81st year, it continues to welcome families of all faiths, sharing the light of Christ through its educational mission. For countless alumni, the school has been a cornerstone in their development, with many returning to enroll their own children, thus perpetuating a cycle of faith and learning that has lasted for generations.
