West Valley Man Pleads Guilty to Girlfriend’s Murder, Cites Mental Illness

A man from West Valley has pleaded guilty to the murder of his girlfriend, citing a mental health condition. Frederick Jason Edwards, aged 48, admitted in court on October 10, 2024, that he shot Esperanza Chavez, 25, during an incident that led to her tragic death. Prosecutors characterized Edwards as a habitual violent offender due to his extensive criminal history.

In January 2024, Edwards faced multiple charges in the 3rd District Court, including murder and the discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, both classified as first-degree felonies. He was also charged with obstruction of justice and possession of a weapon by a restricted person, both second-degree felonies, along with abuse or desecration of a dead body, a third-degree felony. As part of a plea agreement, the latter charges were dismissed when he pleaded guilty with a mental condition.

Edwards acknowledged in his plea statement, “I did cause the death of Esperanza Chavez by shooting her with a firearm.” He has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, which he reported experiencing at the time of the crime. The court has deferred his sentencing for up to one year to allow him to undergo treatment for his disorder.

The circumstances surrounding Chavez’s death are deeply troubling. Her body was discovered on January 20, 2024, near a dumpster located at 3994 S. 300 West. An autopsy revealed that she had suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, inflicted at close range.

Using surveillance footage, law enforcement identified Edwards as a suspect. The video captured him arriving at the scene in a Chevrolet truck around 12:20 a.m.. He was seen attempting to dispose of Chavez’s body and subsequently dragging it to the side of the dumpster, where he attempted to cover it with clothing and a bag.

Further investigations revealed incriminating evidence. A search warrant executed on Edwards’ truck uncovered blood stains on various surfaces, including the passenger seat, center console, and glove compartment. A coat found on the passenger seat was also soaked in blood.

Edwards’ violent history is extensive. Authorities classify him as a documented gang member with a record that includes numerous assaults, mayhem, resisting arrest, threats, and even an escape from custody. In a separate case, he faces charges of attempted mayhem and assault against Chavez, stemming from an incident in October 2023, where he allegedly punched her repeatedly while driving.

The case has raised significant concerns within the community regarding issues of domestic violence and mental health. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on the impact of Edwards’ actions and the necessary support for victims of domestic abuse.
