California Launches Leadership Institute for Young Black Women
The California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute (CABWCEI) has launched the Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute, a new initiative aimed at fostering leadership skills among young Black women. This partnership with Mount Saint Mary’s University Los Angeles (MSMU) was announced on November 18, 2025, marking a significant step towards empowering the next generation of leaders.
Kellie Todd Griffin, President and CEO of CABWCEI, emphasized the program’s larger mission. “Our mission is far bigger than a program—it is a movement to ensure that Black girls recognize the brilliance, leadership, and power already within them,” she stated. Griffin highlighted the importance of creating affirming spaces for Black girls that prepare them to lead, suggesting that this initiative will have a lasting impact on the future of California.
Named after Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, who represents the city’s 2nd District, the Institute reflects her commitment to advancing opportunities for women and girls. Supervisor Mitchell remarked on the disparities affecting Black girls and women in California, noting, “With this program, we have an opportunity to help change that trajectory by proactively investing in the success of Black girls—an investment that strengthens our communities as a whole.”
Program Structure and Goals
The Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute is designed as a seven-month program hosted at MSMU’s Doheny Campus. It targets middle school and high school girls, particularly from underserved communities. The curriculum includes monthly sessions focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and college readiness. Each session combines academic enrichment with mentorship from accomplished Black women leaders, providing participants with essential skills and networks to thrive in education and beyond.
Ann McElaney-Johnson, PhD, President of Mount Saint Mary’s University, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “The Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute embodies our shared belief in the power of education and mentorship to transform lives.” She noted that together, they aim to empower young women to lead with confidence and purpose.
Applications for the inaugural cohort are now open. The program is tuition-free, although there is a modest application fee. Interested applicants can find more information and submit applications through the CABWCEI website.
Dr. Krishuana Hines-Gaither, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships at MSMU, reflected on the program’s significance. “The Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute is the type of program that I wish I had experienced,” she shared. Hines-Gaither highlighted the benefits of a cohort model, where girls will cultivate leadership skills while being supported by esteemed facilitators.
