Trump Hints at Third Presidential Run, Rules Out VP Bid
Former President Donald Trump has suggested he may consider a run for a third term in the 2028 presidential election. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed enthusiasm about the prospect, stating he “would love” to run again. When asked directly if he would rule it out, he responded, “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me,” highlighting his ongoing interest in a potential comeback.
While Trump’s comments have stirred speculation, legal experts assert that he cannot run for president again due to the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Ratified in 1951, this amendment explicitly states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Constitutional scholars have repeatedly emphasized that any attempt by Trump to circumvent this rule would face substantial legal challenges.
In contrast to his presidential ambitions, Trump dismissed the idea of running for vice president in 2028. He described the notion as “too cute,” stating, “I think people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It wouldn’t be right.” This statement appears to clarify his intentions regarding the upcoming election cycle, leaving the door open for other Republican candidates while affirming his distinct preference for the presidency.
As Trump navigates the political landscape, he has also acknowledged individuals he sees as potential successors within the Republican Party. He praised Marco Rubio, the current Secretary of State, and JD Vance, the Vice President, suggesting they could be formidable candidates. “I’m not sure if anybody would run against those two. I think if they ever formed a group, it would be unstoppable,” he noted during his trip to Asia.
Trump’s remarks come shortly after Stephen Bannon, a close ally, reiterated the possibility of Trump’s return to the White House. In a video interview with the Economist, Bannon asserted, “He’s going to get a third term. Trump is going to be president in ’28 and people ought to get accommodated with that.” His comments reflect an ongoing narrative among Trump’s supporters, even in light of constitutional barriers.
The former president has previously hinted at plans for a potential 2028 campaign, with the Trump organization even launching merchandise, including “Trump 2028” hats, earlier this year. This marketing move suggests a continued focus on future electoral possibilities, despite the constitutional context.
During his recent comments, Trump also disclosed that he underwent an MRI scan during a visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He reported that the results were “perfect,” marking the first time he has provided an explanation for his second medical examination of the year.
As the political landscape evolves, Trump’s ambitions and the reactions from his allies and critics continue to shape the discussion around the future of the Republican Party. Whether he will indeed run again remains uncertain, but his recent statements keep the conversation alive as the 2028 election approaches.
