Cowboys Seek Redemption After Tough Loss to Nicholls
The McNeese State Cowboys are regrouping following a disappointing defeat to Nicholls State, as they aim to salvage their season with only four games remaining. The Cowboys currently hold a record of 2-6, including 1-3 in the Southland Conference, which eliminates any hope for a winning season. With a maximum possible record of 6-6, they are on track for their sixth consecutive season without a winning record, the longest such streak in the program’s history.
This challenging moment follows a significant 31-7 loss to Nicholls on October 24, 2025. The Colonels, who came into the game with only one victory this season, dominated the field. “A total, total poor performance by everybody, starting with me,” said head coach Matt Viator. He acknowledged the collective shortcomings of the coaches and players, stating, “It was not good. For us as a football team, we have to get better at the process. We have to get better every day.”
The Cowboys struggled to establish any offensive momentum during the game, totaling only 44 offensive plays and accumulating just 264 yards compared to Nicholls’ 464 yards. They fell behind 10-0 early on and were unable to recover. “It is hard to overcome that,” Viator remarked. “We have been playing from behind all season.”
Defensive issues compounded the Cowboys’ struggles, as missed tackles and assignments allowed Nicholls to run for an impressive 303 yards. The Cowboys’ quarterback, Jake Strong, faced a particularly tough game, finishing with 10 completions on 18 attempts for 170 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. One of those interceptions led to a 45-yard touchdown return by Ty Marsh in the third quarter, solidifying a commanding lead for Nicholls.
Despite the setbacks, Coach Viator expressed confidence in Strong’s abilities. “(Jake) has done some really good things this year, and I feel he gives us the best chance to win,” he stated during a press conference. He emphasized the need for the team to support Strong better moving forward.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys will have an opportunity to bounce back this Saturday, October 28, when they host the struggling Northwestern State at Navarre Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 18:00. Viator remains focused on the immediate challenge, stating, “All I talk about is this week. It’s all about trying to play better this week.”
As McNeese State prepares for this crucial matchup, the Cowboys are determined to overcome recent disappointments and strive for improvement in the final stretch of the season.
