The race for Virginia’s Attorney General is heating up as candidates prepare for a debate scheduled for March 15, 2024. This event comes on the heels of a texting scandal involving Democratic candidate Jay Jones, which may influence the tightly contested gubernatorial race in the state.

Jones, who is challenging the Republican incumbent, Jason Miyares, faces scrutiny over messages he reportedly sent that contained offensive language. In one controversial exchange, Jones referenced historical figures in a way that has drawn significant backlash. Political science professor at Virginia Tech, Karen Holt, remarked on the implications of this scandal, stating, “Whether this is discussed first, it certainly sets the undertone for the entire evening’s debate.”

The debate is expected to attract considerable attention, particularly due to the controversy surrounding Jones. His messages included lines such as, “Three people, two bullets… Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot… Gilbert gets two bullets to the head,” which prompted the recipient to ask him to cease. Jones has publicly acknowledged the messages, expressing regret for his choice of words and stating that he has apologized to the family of the individual mentioned.

As the debate approaches, Holt suggested that Jones must reassure voters of his qualifications. “What Mr. Jones needs to do is to assure the listening audience that he has the status and the stature and the responsibility in order to fulfill those positions,” she noted.

In contrast, Miyares is expected to highlight his achievements during his tenure as Attorney General, focusing on his priorities and the positive changes implemented in Virginia. Holt added, “Certainly he doesn’t need to say very much other than this is utterly inappropriate for anyone to have used that language.”

The outcome of this debate could have significant ramifications not only for the candidates’ respective campaigns but also for the political landscape in Virginia. The Attorney General position holds considerable influence, as either candidate would be third in line for the governorship should circumstances arise.

With the debate looming, both candidates are poised to make their cases to the electorate, navigating the challenges presented by recent events. The public’s reaction to how they handle the scandal may ultimately shape the future of the Attorney General’s office in Virginia.
