SpaceX Launches Falcon 9 to Deploy SpainSat NG 2 Satellite
SpaceX is set to launch its Falcon 9 rocket on July 11, 2025, marking the final flight for a particular first-stage booster, which will be expended during this mission. The rocket will deploy the SpainSat NG 2 communications satellite, an important asset for Spain’s secure communication capabilities. This launch, initially scheduled for July 10, was postponed by 24 hours, though SpaceX has not disclosed the reasons for the delay.
The Falcon 9 first-stage booster will not be recovered after this mission, a decision made to enhance the rocket’s performance. It will not be equipped with landing legs or grid fins, allowing for additional weight savings that contribute to its lift capacity. SpaceX aims to recover the two halves of the payload fairing, which will parachute into the Atlantic Ocean post-launch.
The SpainSat NG 2 satellite has a fully fueled mass of 6.1 tons (13,448 lbs.) and will be deployed into a geosynchronous transfer orbit approximately 35 minutes after liftoff. Following deployment, the satellite will maneuver itself to a geostationary orbit. The launch is scheduled to occur from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station during a four-hour window opening at 21:30 EDT (01:30 UTC).
Weather conditions for the launch appear favorable, with the 45th Weather Squadron forecasting over a 95 percent chance of suitable weather. This mission will mark the 134th orbital launch for SpaceX in 2025, equaling the total number of launches for the entirety of 2024. The company has set a goal of exceeding 170 launches this year.
SpainSat NG 2: Enhancing Secure Communications
The SpainSat NG 2 satellite is the second in a pair of geostationary satellites developed by Hisdesat, following the launch of SpainSat NG 1 on January 29, 2025. The first satellite has been operational since August 11, 2025, positioned at 30 degrees West, while the second will operate at 29 degrees East. Both satellites are designed to have a nominal lifespan of 15 years.
Built on Airbus Defence and Space’s Eurostar Neo satellite bus, the satellites feature a wingspan of nearly 50 meters (164 ft.). Funding for the SpainSat NG 2 project was partially provided by a €74 million ($86 million) investment from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Spanish Space Agency and the Center for Technological Development and Innovation.
According to Diana Morant, Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, this satellite represents a significant advancement for the Spanish industry in the realm of secure communication systems. In her statement, she emphasized the satellite’s innovative capabilities and its role in showcasing the Ministry’s commitment to technological development.
While the primary function of the SpainSat NG 2 is to provide secure communications for the Government of Spain, it will also support the Govsatcom program for the European Union and NATO. The two satellites are equipped to operate across multiple frequency bands, including X-, Ka-, and UHF-bands, expanding their utility and reach.
The combination of the SpainSat NG 1 and SpainSat NG 2 will provide comprehensive coverage, extending from North America to Asia, thereby enhancing communication capabilities across that vast region. This launch underscores SpaceX’s ongoing commitment to advancing satellite technology and its partnership with international clients in the aerospace sector.
