Arizona Wildcats Surge to 47-32 Halftime Lead Against Norfolk State
The Arizona Wildcats secured a commanding 47-32 halftime lead against the Norfolk State Spartans on March 15, 2024, at McKale Center. Center Motiejus Krivas played a pivotal role, contributing 16 points and seven rebounds during the first half, helping the Wildcats shake off a sluggish start.
Arizona entered the game with a perfect record of 5-0 and ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Despite this strong positioning, the Wildcats struggled early, missing five of their first six shots. Norfolk State capitalized on this slow start, taking an 8-7 lead into the first media timeout and maintaining momentum throughout the initial stages of the contest.
With 6:54 remaining in the half, the Spartans held their sixth lead, showcasing their tenacity. However, the Wildcats managed to tie the game at 24 when Jaden Bradley drew a foul while converting a layup. Following Bradley’s basket, Adrean Newton responded with a jumper, restoring a narrow 26-25 lead for Norfolk State.
The Spartans displayed impressive shooting, hitting 47.6% of their shots and successfully making 4 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc. In contrast, Arizona struggled, shooting just 43.8% and missing all three of their three-point attempts, including Krivas’s first career attempt from long range.
As the half progressed, the Wildcats found their rhythm, launching a decisive 16-4 run that propelled them to a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half. This surge was crucial in regaining control of the game.
In addition to the scoring struggles, Arizona faced injury concerns when wing Ivan Kharchenkov twisted his left ankle under the basket with just over five minutes left in the first half. He was assisted off the court by UA athletic trainer Justin Kokoskie and did not return to the bench for the remainder of the half, raising concerns about his availability for future games.
As the Wildcats look to maintain their momentum in the second half, they will need to build on their strong finish and address their early-game inefficiencies. The team will aim to secure another victory and continue their undefeated streak as they navigate the challenges of the season.
