Isabella Boyle Achieves 200-Point Milestone in Field Hockey
Sophomore field hockey player Isabella Boyle has made history at Hazleton Area High School by becoming only the second athlete in the program’s history to reach the significant milestone of 200 career points. Boyle achieved this feat with a crucial goal during the fourth quarter against Wyoming Valley West. As she prepares for the District 2 Class 3A semifinal against Wilkes-Barre Area, Boyle is just two points shy of matching the school record of 202 points held by Kara Sanford.
Isabella, affectionately known as Bella, hails from Drums and has a well-rounded athletic background, having participated in various sports including softball and swimming. At just 15 years old, she has developed a strong presence on the field hockey team, showcasing not only her talent but also her dedication to the sport.
Reflecting on her milestone, Boyle shared, “When you reach milestones in sports, it makes you look back and reflect upon where you started.” She recalls her earlier days when she often struggled to make the top team, emphasizing the importance of hard work and perseverance. “If the younger version of myself could see me now, she would be so proud of our success,” she added.
To achieve prolific scoring, Boyle believes it takes a deep understanding of the game and a variety of shooting techniques. “You have to read your opponent’s defense and goalie and adapt your shooting,” she explained. Her teammates play a critical role in her success, and she credits players like Lauren Harmonosky and Addy Bobrowski for their support, stating that scoring is truly a team effort.
While Boyle has experienced games where she has scored multiple goals and others where she has assisted more than she has scored, she finds satisfaction in both roles. “I feel more pride when I get to see my teammates score,” she noted, highlighting the importance of collective achievement in her team’s dynamic.
As the top scorer for the Lady Cougars, Boyle has faced increased attention from opposing teams, often being marked closely throughout the game. “I have had to adapt my skills to handle this style of play,” she remarked, acknowledging the challenges presented by defenders who focus on her during matches.
Despite the pressure, Boyle finds joy in the game. “When I am on the field, I don’t think about anything else but being in the moment and feeling alive,” she said. Her mother, Kristin Boyle, who serves as an assistant coach, often reminds her to play true to herself.
The season has been a rollercoaster for the Lady Cougars, but Boyle emphasizes the importance of teamwork through the highs and lows. “We win as a team and lose as a team,” she stated, reinforcing the bond her team shares.
Looking ahead to the playoffs, Boyle expressed confidence in her team’s strategy. “We plan to stay focused and play Hazleton hockey,” she said, highlighting their commitment to playing with honor and spirit. The upcoming match against the Wilkes-Barre Area team, which they defeated in overtime last season, will require them to concentrate on their own performance rather than the opponent.
Boyle also reflected on how their varied schedule has prepared them for the postseason, stating, “The variety of circumstances we faced helped us learn and adapt our style of play.” The challenges have been beneficial, allowing the team to grow stronger.
An additional source of inspiration for Boyle is her grandmother, Mary Kelly, who is also the head coach and recently received recognition for her courageous battle against cancer. “Her strength, faith, resilience and courage have shown me what it means to fight,” Boyle shared. The connection between her family and the sport is a source of motivation, and she looks forward to potentially playing alongside her younger sister, Delilah, in the future.
As for the support she has received throughout her journey, Boyle expressed gratitude towards her coaches and teammates. “I would like to thank my high school coaches and my travel coaches for their endless support and training,” she concluded, reflecting the humility and teamwork that define her approach to both sports and life.
With her remarkable talent and determination, Isabella Boyle continues to inspire those around her as she aims for further accomplishments in her field hockey career.
