Princeton Men’s Soccer Eyes NCAA Tournament Success with Strong Team
Princeton University’s men’s soccer team is gaining momentum as they prepare for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Under the guidance of head coach Jim Barlow, the Tigers have established themselves as a formidable force, currently holding the No. 6 spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll and ranking first in the NCAA Division I Committee’s Top 16, released on October 14, 2023. The team’s strong performance suggests they could host matches throughout the tournament, provided they maintain their current form.
During a recent match against unbeaten Bryant University, Princeton demonstrated their capabilities despite finishing the game in a 0-0 draw. After a cautious first half, the Tigers surged in the second half, applying pressure that disrupted Bryant’s slick passing game. Following the match, Barlow expressed confidence in his team’s potential. “I think we know we are a good team and we can compete with anybody,” he stated.
Princeton’s defensive prowess has been a key highlight this season. The team has only conceded four goals in 13 matches, ranking second nationally behind North Carolina State, which has allowed just two goals. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Samuels has been pivotal in this defensive success. He emphasized the importance of such tough matches as confidence builders as the season nears its conclusion. “These are confidence builders for when we have to get a really big result,” Samuels remarked.
The Tigers currently hold a record of 10-1-2, showcasing their ability to defend effectively while also pressing for goals. Senior forward Daniel Ittycheria, who leads the team with seven goals, noted the team’s cohesion and determination. “We can take it to any team that comes into our house or if we go to theirs,” he said, reflecting on the team spirit that has characterized their play this season.
Looking ahead, Princeton has three crucial Ivy League games remaining: an away match at Yale, a home game against Dartmouth, and another away match at Penn. These matches will be vital for securing a favorable position in the upcoming Ivy League Tournament, where the top seed will host. Barlow’s team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight times during his tenure, yet they have yet to secure a victory, holding a record of 0-6-1 in tournament play. The last time Princeton won a tournament game was over three decades ago, under the leadership of coach Bob Bradley.
Despite the historical challenges, the current team embodies a commitment to mutual support and teamwork. Samuels highlighted the selflessness of the squad as a significant factor in their success. “We are such a selfless team and everyone is going to run for their lives and work for each other,” he stated.
As the season progresses, the Tigers remain focused on continuous improvement and their immediate goal of defeating Yale. Barlow stressed that rankings and expectations should not distract them from their aim of enhancing their gameplay. “Every game is tough,” he said, emphasizing the need for the team to stay grounded and focused on their performance.
With a strong blend of talent, determination, and teamwork, Princeton men’s soccer is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, potentially changing their historical narrative.
