Steph Curry’s Late-Game Heroics Propel Warriors Past Nuggets in Overtime
The Golden State Warriors opened their 2025-26 season with an exhilarating overtime victory against the Denver Nuggets, winning 137-131 on October 24, 2025. The game showcased the brilliance of Steph Curry, who scored an impressive 42 points, with 35 of those points coming in the second half. Curry’s performance was crucial in transforming a challenging game into a memorable comeback.
The Warriors struggled defensively in the first half, allowing the Nuggets to hold a commanding 70-61 lead at halftime. Denver capitalized on the Warriors’ defensive lapses, shooting 60% from inside the arc and 50% from beyond the three-point line. Despite these challenges, the Warriors managed to tie the game at 94 after a strong third quarter, where they scored 33 points.
Curry’s clutch shooting led the charge in the fourth quarter. He tied the game twice in the final minute, first with a three-pointer that electrified the Chase Center crowd and then again with a long-range shot from the logo with just 21 seconds remaining. A pivotal defensive stop by Draymond Green on three-time MVP Nikola Jokic sent the game into overtime.
In the extra period, both Curry and Al Horford contributed with three-pointers, while Jonathan Kuminga showcased his skills with a euro-step layup following a steal. This sequence gave the Warriors a 128-125 lead with 2:39 left in overtime. Curry capped off the night with a coast-to-coast layup, further solidifying the Warriors’ lead and celebrating with his signature night-night gesture as the clock wound down.
The victory highlighted the depth of the Warriors’ roster. Jimmy Butler added 21 points, while Horford contributed 13. The team’s offensive firepower proved too much for the Nuggets, despite a stellar performance from Aaron Gordon, who scored 50 points.
For the Warriors, the game also marked a positive shift in their turnover issues. After averaging over 20 turnovers per game during the preseason, they managed to reduce their mistakes to just eight turnovers against the Nuggets. This improvement signals a focus on ball control as the season progresses.
Rookie guard Will Richard continued to impress, contributing significantly during his time on the floor. After earning the game ball for his performance against the Lakers, Richard made an immediate impact in this contest, securing an offensive rebound and scoring six points in 12 second-half minutes.
Looking ahead, the Warriors will face a challenging schedule with their first back-to-back games of the season, starting with a trip to Portland on October 27, 2025. As they navigate the season, the team’s ability to refine its defensive strategies will be crucial in maintaining their momentum, especially with a player of Curry’s caliber leading the charge.
