The Houston Texans faced disappointment on October 23, 2025, as they fell to the Seattle Seahawks with a score of 27-19 at Lumen Field. Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn expressed regret over a crucial late-game kickoff that significantly impacted the team’s chances of a comeback.

With just over two minutes remaining, the Texans scored a touchdown through a pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud to rookie running back Woody Marks. This brought the score to 27-19, providing the Texans a glimmer of hope. However, in a pivotal moment, Fairbairn’s kickoff failed to reach the end zone, landing short and allowing Seahawks returner George Holani to receive the ball one yard deep in the end zone.

Fairbairn reflected on his mistake, stating, “I was disappointed about how that play ended up. The game plan was clear to me when I was told it was kick it a touchback or kick it out of bounds. So, we couldn’t give them an opportunity to waste time and save that two-minute warning.” His mishit kick prevented the Texans from using their final timeout effectively, which could have been crucial in their defensive strategy.

Coach DeMeco Ryans echoed Fairbairn’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of execution in late-game situations. “The plan at the end of the game was kicking the ball out of bounds so we could utilize the timeout, and we did not execute that,” Ryans stated. “Again, it goes to the entire game. You know, it’s frustrating that we’re not executing the things that we’re supposed to do.”

Despite the setback, Fairbairn has had a strong season overall, successfully converting 13 of 15 field goals and all 10 extra point attempts. He has also demonstrated his range by making 5 of 7 field goals from 50 yards or longer.

The Texans’ loss can be attributed to more than just Fairbairn’s kickoff. Throughout the game, the team struggled with penalties, racking up 10 for a total of 105 yards, and faced challenges with turnovers and an ineffective offensive strategy. Furthermore, the Seahawks’ wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a standout performance, further complicating the Texans’ efforts on defense.

Looking ahead, Fairbairn is set for a reunion this Sunday with longtime long snapper Jon Weeks, who now plays for the San Francisco 49ers. “I’m looking forward to that,” Fairbairn remarked. “Looking forward to seeing him this week, but the main thing is to get a win, regardless of who we’re facing.”

As the Texans regroup following this defeat, they will aim to learn from their mistakes and improve their execution ahead of their next matchup.
