Amazon Cuts 14,000 Jobs Amid AI Investment; UPS Slashes 48,000
BREAKING: Amazon has just announced a significant reduction in its workforce, cutting approximately 14,000 corporate jobs as the retail giant shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence while curbing costs elsewhere. Employees impacted by these layoffs will be notified today, October 31, 2023.
In a letter to employees, Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, confirmed that most workers will have 90 days to seek new positions within the company. Those unable to find new roles or who choose not to pursue internal opportunities will receive transitional support, including severance pay, outplacement services, and health insurance benefits.
With a corporate workforce of around 350,000 and a total employee count of approximately 1.56 million, this cut represents a 4% reduction in Amazon’s corporate staff. The urgency of this announcement highlights the ongoing challenges in the retail sector, as companies adapt to changing market conditions and technological advancements.
In parallel, United Parcel Service (UPS) has reported substantial job losses as well. The logistics giant has cut 48,000 jobs so far this year. Despite these significant reductions, UPS revealed third-quarter earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations, reporting a profit of $1.31 billion, or $1.55 per share, for the quarter ending September 30, 2023. This marks a decrease from $1.99 billion, or $1.80 per share, in the same period last year.
UPS’s revenue totaled $21.42 billion, surpassing analysts’ estimates of $20.84 billion. The stock surged more than 7% in afternoon trading, signaling investor confidence in its turnaround efforts despite the ongoing job cuts.
The implications of these layoffs are significant, reflecting a broader trend across industries where companies are prioritizing efficiency and technological investment amid economic uncertainty. As Amazon pivots towards artificial intelligence, the human impact of these job cuts cannot be overlooked, with thousands of families facing transitions in the job market.
Both Amazon and UPS are navigating a rapidly evolving landscape, and these developments are crucial for stakeholders to monitor. As the situation unfolds, the focus will remain on how these companies manage workforce transitions and adapt to emerging technologies.
Stay tuned for more updates on these critical developments impacting the job market and the future of work in these major corporations.
