Boulder High’s Haunted House “Shipwreck of Souls” Opens Soon!
URGENT UPDATE: Boulder High School is set to unveil its highly anticipated haunted house, “Shipwreck of Souls,” this weekend, promising thrills and chills for all who dare to enter. Open from 7 PM to 10 PM on Saturday, and 6 PM to 9 PM on Halloween, this student-run production is the most ambitious yet, aiming to deliver a spine-tingling experience like no other.
The haunted house theme immerses visitors in a chilling underwater adventure, where they might encounter terrifying sea creatures, ghostly sailors, and even the legendary Kraken. Co-director Mads Cass, a junior at Boulder High, emphasized the dedication of the approximately 40 student actors and technical crew members, stating, “You can tell that a lot of work and a lot of love was put into it.”
With a narrative set in the 1920s, guests will board a sunken cruise ship and explore eerie rooms like a casino and a ballroom, all crafted to evoke a sense of dread and fascination. Technical director Paul Mealey, a former student actor, describes the project as “student-run, adult-supervised,” emphasizing that the goal is to create an enjoyable and frightening atmosphere.
“The goal is just to make smiles happen — and some screams,” Mealey noted.
This year’s haunted house is inspired by co-director Scarlett Caste’s personal fear of fish, adding an authentic layer of terror. Caste explained, “Every single year, it is a completely different experience. Truly, it never feels the same.”
Students have transformed the school’s hallways into a haunting underwater wreckage, complete with barnacles, tentacles, and seaweed. To enhance the immersive experience, the floor in one room is tilted to induce a “seasick” feeling among visitors. Guests can expect to hear the sound of crashing ocean waves and period-appropriate music as they navigate through the haunted ship.
“There’s blood in everything,” stated Odalis Torres, the makeup head, indicating the meticulous attention to detail in the haunted house’s design. “Nothing in the haunted house has not been touched by blood.”
Formerly seen as a bloody rabbit in last year’s “Malice in Wonderland,” senior Darin Williams is now serving drinks in the ship’s speakeasy, observing varied reactions from attendees. “Some scream, while others try their best to keep a straight face,” he remarked, noting that the fear is palpable.
Tickets for “Shipwreck of Souls” are available online at tinyurl.com/3ktx638r or at the door, with proceeds benefiting the Boulder High theater department. A special “lights on” version will be offered at 6 PM on Saturday, providing a less intense experience for younger audiences.
