California Governor Newsom Blasts Trump After Artillery Blast
UPDATE: California Governor Gavin Newsom is expressing outrage after a live artillery shell detonated during a Marine Corps celebration, narrowly missing civilians on Interstate 5 on Saturday. The incident, which left two vehicles—one belonging to Vice President JD Vance—damaged by shrapnel, has sparked a heated confrontation between Newsom and the White House.
Officials confirmed that the mishap occurred during the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary training exercise at Camp Pendleton. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the close call has raised serious safety concerns. Newsom’s office released a statement emphasizing the gravity of the situation, stating, “The shrapnel that hit CHP (California Highway Patrol) vehicles came from this ordnance. It’s no small thing.”
Newsom took to social media to criticize both Trump and Vance, declaring, “If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.” His remarks reflect frustration over the federal government shutdown, as well as the decision to conduct live-fire exercises over a major highway.
The incident was initially flagged by Newsom last week, following a report from MeidasTouch about the planned live missile demonstrations. In response, Vance’s office dismissed the concerns, asserting that the Marine Corps deemed the exercise safe and routine. “This exercise is part of established training practices,” said William Martin, Vance’s communications director.
However, the situation escalated dramatically when a 155-millimeter shell detonated prematurely, prompting Newsom to demand accountability. His press office stated, “Without a doubt an apology is owed—not just to Californians, but all Americans.”
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel had struck one of its vehicles, with additional reports indicating that a motorcycle in Vance’s security detail was also damaged. CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado remarked, “This was an unusual and concerning situation. It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway.”
The First Marine Expeditionary Force, responsible for the demonstration, is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. They affirmed that rigorous rehearsals were in place to prevent such occurrences, stating, “We trust this system with our lives.”
As tensions rise, the political ramifications of this incident are unfolding rapidly. Newsom’s call for an apology from Trump and Vance could influence public perception during an already contentious period.
What happens next? With investigations underway and calls for accountability echoing through social media, all eyes will be on the responses from the White House and military officials in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as it impacts not only California but the entire nation.
