URGENT UPDATE: A tragic incident at Hong Kong International Airport has left two security officers dead after a Boeing 747 cargo plane skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time on October 20, 2023. The plane collided with a security patrol car, pushing it into the water during the landing.

According to a statement from Hong Kong’s civil aviation department, the aircraft deviated from the North Runway and crashed through the fencing before entering the sea. Steven Yiu Siu-Chung, the executive director for Hong Kong’s airport operations, confirmed the details during a press conference earlier today.

The two security officers, who had served at the airport for seven and twelve years respectively, were inside the patrol vehicle at the time. One officer was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. Authorities emphasized that the patrol vehicle was stationed at a safe distance and did not encroach upon the runway prior to the collision.

Emergency responders mobilized swiftly, with a total of 213 firefighters and emergency personnel dispatched to the scene, utilizing 45 vehicles and ships for rescue operations. Four crew members aboard the cargo plane were rescued and taken to the hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

As of now, the North Runway remains closed, but operations on the South and Center runways are ongoing, ensuring that over 1,000 scheduled flights are unaffected by the incident. Airport officials are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining flight schedules.

Photos from the landing site reveal the cargo plane’s fuselage in pieces, with the tail section notably separated. The aircraft was arriving from Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai, and the incident is under thorough investigation by the Hong Kong airport authority.

In a statement to Reuters, Emirates confirmed that the crew members of the cargo plane are safe and reported that there was no cargo on board at the time of the crash.

This devastating accident raises urgent questions about airport safety protocols and the circumstances leading to the crash. Authorities will continue to investigate the incident, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

Stay tuned for more details on this developing story.
