EU Ambassador Urges Stronger Ties During Urgent Boulder Visit
UPDATE: In an urgent push to bolster transatlantic relations, EU Ambassador to the U.S. Jovita Neliupšienė visited Boulder, Colorado on October 17, 2023, emphasizing the need for strengthened ties between the European Union and the state. During her address at the University of Colorado Boulder, Neliupšienė revealed that the EU has invested $24.9 billion in Colorado, supporting tens of thousands of jobs and enhancing trade.
Neliupšienė, who was appointed on January 1, 2024, articulated the importance of collaboration: “The relations are very close and very diverse with Colorado, and I think that’s important to continue.” Her visit signifies a commitment to deepening economic and cultural links, particularly as trade between Colorado and the EU approaches $1 billion annually.
During her visit, Neliupšienė met with Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett to discuss the city’s role in the EU Cities Gateway program. This initiative aims to connect cities across the U.S., Canada, and the EU, sharing best practices to enhance urban living. “I’m really, really glad that Boulder decided to join the project,” she stated, highlighting the city’s proactive approach in engaging with international partners.
The ambassador’s visit comes at a pivotal time, as a new trade deal established in August caps tariffs at 15% for most EU exports, aiming to create a more stable trading environment. Neliupšienė acknowledged the EU’s general aversion to tariffs and the potential impact on consumers, urging local communities to minimize trade friction.
In a session with CU Boulder students, Neliupšienė addressed pressing issues, including the EU’s stance on U.S. policies and its commitment to human rights. “The European Union is built on the values of democracy, rule of law, and human rights,” she asserted, encouraging students to engage actively in societal matters.
As the EU seeks to enhance its footprint in the U.S., Neliupšienė’s visit underscores the urgency of fostering international cooperation. With thousands of local jobs at stake and significant investment opportunities on the horizon, the call for a united approach resonates strongly within the Boulder community and beyond.
Moving forward, watch for developments in the EU Cities Gateway program and potential trade adjustments as both entities work to strengthen their relationship. This visit marks not just another diplomatic engagement but a critical moment for Colorado’s economic future and its ties to Europe.
