UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, Garfield High School narrowly defeated Roosevelt High School 37-30 in front of a record crowd of 14,000 fans at the 90th East L.A. Classic held at East Los Angeles College on November 3, 2023. This match recorded the largest regular season attendance for a high school football game in California this season, highlighting the fierce rivalry and dedication of alumni and supporters.

The atmosphere was electric as Garfield’s new head coach, Patrick Vargas, a former Bulldogs quarterback, celebrated his first victory at the helm. “When you step on the field, you hear that roaring crowd. You hear that booing crowd. That’s the time of your life,” Vargas shared earlier this week. The Bulldogs (7-2, 6-0) showcased resilience, particularly after losing All-City running back Ceasar Reyes to an injury early in the game.

Backup running back Zastice Jauregui emerged as a star, scoring two crucial touchdowns, including a 15-yard run in the third quarter that extended Garfield’s lead to 34-8. Jauregui’s performance was vital as he stepped up in a challenging moment for the team. Defensive lineman Chuck Perez also contributed significantly with a three-yard touchdown run and a fumble recovery, showcasing Garfield’s depth and determination.

Roosevelt (4-5, 3-2) fought back valiantly, briefly taking an 8-6 lead in the first quarter after a touchdown from Jordan Nunez followed by a two-point conversion from Abraham Cardenas. The Rough Riders rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points and pulling within seven with a late touchdown and conversion, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Garfield’s lead.

Looking ahead, Garfield has little time to celebrate their victory. They face a critical match against Northern League champion Eagle Rock on Thursday night, which could determine their playoff aspirations in the City Section Open Division.

This match not only highlighted the competitive spirit of high school football but also the strong community ties that bring fans together, making the East L.A. Classic a cherished event in the local sports calendar. As the Bulldogs prepare for their next challenge, the excitement and anticipation continue to build among players and fans alike.
