Kansas Stars Peterson, Dybantsa Downplay NBA Draft Hype
UPDATE: Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and BYU wing AJ Dybantsa are at the forefront of speculation for the top picks in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, but both players insist their current focus is solely on their college season. Speaking at Big 12 Media Day in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 15, 2025, Peterson, a highly-touted five-star recruit, emphasized that he is not distracted by the buzz surrounding his potential as the No. 1 pick.
“I handle it by not even paying any attention to it,” Peterson stated. “I’m just going to go out and play and win games.” The 6-foot-6 guard, projected to go first in ESPN’s latest mock draft, was also recognized as the Big 12 preseason freshman of the year and received unanimous selection to the all-Big 12 preseason first team.
Meanwhile, Dybantsa, a 6-foot-9 standout who is anticipated to be drafted second, is also trying to sidestep the talk of his draft potential. After a stellar performance against Nebraska, where he scored 30 points on 10-for-19 shooting, he acknowledged the importance of focusing on the present. “That was a good experience, despite the loss,” Dybantsa said. “I learned a lot. I felt more comfortable getting into an exhibition and just getting to [compete].”
Both players are keenly aware of the stakes but are united in their desire to help their teams succeed this season. “I think we both have similar mindsets,” Dybantsa added, referring to his relationship with Peterson. “We’re just trying to prove ourselves as college players and win.”
Peterson also highlighted his aim to lead by example for the Jayhawks. “I lead by example and I’m trying to do all the right stuff, both on and off the court,” he said. This commitment to leadership is crucial, especially as both players navigate the pressures that come with being top draft prospects.
In addition to Peterson and Dybantsa, UCF coach Johnny Dawkins mentioned another player to watch: freshman Cameron Boozer, who is projected to be the No. 3 pick. Dawkins, who flew in after UCF’s exhibition loss at Duke, praised Boozer’s competitive spirit and talent. “He’s terrific. He’s a great basketball player and he still has room to grow,” Dawkins said.
As the college basketball season approaches, all eyes will be on Peterson, Dybantsa, and Boozer, who are poised to make significant impacts both in the Big 12 and at the professional level. Fans can expect thrilling performances as these young athletes strive to balance the weight of expectations with their commitment to their teams.
Stay tuned for more updates as the college basketball landscape evolves and the race for the 2026 NBA Draft heats up.
