BREAKING: King William High School has officially reopened its stadium and track for public use following a wave of community opposition. The facility, which had been padlocked since August, is now accessible outside of school hours, allowing residents to take advantage of this taxpayer-funded resource.

The decision, announced at the October 21, 2023 school board meeting, comes after significant public outcry regarding restrictions placed on the facility due to budget concerns. The county invested $1.75 million to convert the high school football field to artificial turf and spent $425,000 to rebuild the two-decade-old track earlier this year.

Superintendent Charles Wagner addressed the criticisms directly, stating, “We’ll make sure we find a way to give that to the community.” However, he cautioned that the facility could be closed again if issues such as vandalism arise.

Community members voiced their support for reopening the track, emphasizing its importance for public health and accessibility. “It’s one of the few safe, level, and well-maintained places to get exercise in our rural community,” said Andrea Perseghin, a local parent, during the meeting. She highlighted the lack of safe walking paths in the area, stating, “Not everyone can afford a gym membership.”

In response to the reopening, school officials have set strict guidelines for public use. Users must adhere to posted rules, including keeping surfaces clean, wearing appropriate footwear, and refraining from bringing animals, bicycles, or skateboards into the fenced area.

Veda Frazier, the school board chair, expressed confidence in staff management of the facility. “I trust staff to make good decisions on opening the track when they see fit,” she said. Meanwhile, Vice Chair Lindsey Catlett reiterated the financial constraints, noting that there are no capital funds available for repairs if damage occurs to the track.

The reopening of the track is a significant win for the community, where residents had previously expressed frustration over being denied access to a facility financed by their taxes. The public is now encouraged to utilize this vital space, fostering a healthier lifestyle for all residents.

As the community celebrates this victory, officials will closely monitor the situation to ensure that the facility remains in good condition. The reopening marks a crucial step in restoring community access to public spaces that promote health and well-being.

Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity, as the facility is open to everyone, regardless of age or background. The King William High School track is now a beacon of community engagement, offering a safe place for exercise and recreation for all.
