Loyola-Chicago Honors Sister Jean with Jersey Patch This Season
UPDATE: Loyola-Chicago’s men’s basketball team will wear a special patch on their jerseys this season to honor the late Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, who passed away on October 9, 2023, at the remarkable age of 106. The announcement was made just hours ago through a heartfelt social media post, declaring, “Our biggest fan will be with us all season long.”
This tribute comes as Loyola-Chicago prepares to kick off its season on Monday, facing off against Cleveland State at home. Sister Jean, who became a national icon during the Ramblers’ Cinderella run to the 2018 Final Four, served as the team’s chaplain for over three decades, inspiring players with her unwavering support and prayers.
Born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on August 21, 1919, Sister Jean joined Loyola-Chicago in 1991 and quickly became a cherished figure in the athletic community. Her role evolved from academic adviser to chaplain, where she was famously involved during the historic NCAA tournament run in 2018 as the No. 11 seed, culminating in a heartbreaking loss to Michigan.
Health concerns led Sister Jean to step down from her duties earlier this year, but her legacy as the Ramblers’ number one fan remains indelible. She was known for her genuine encouragement, urging players to “play hard, play together, and play smart.”
The team aims to carry her spirit onto the court this season, reinforcing the emotional bond she forged with the players and fans alike. As the Ramblers gear up for their first game, the presence of Sister Jean will undoubtedly resonate, reminding everyone of her lifelong dedication to the team.
Fans across the nation are expected to rally behind this tribute, making it a focal point of the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as Loyola-Chicago embarks on this emotional journey.
