Mariners Lose ALCS Game 7, World Series Dreams Dashed
UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners’ World Series aspirations came crashing down as they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, leaving fans heartbroken and players reflecting on what could have been. The decisive match occurred on October 16, 2023, just eight outs away from securing their first-ever World Series appearance.
Seattle entered the game with high hopes, having led the series 3-2, but the dream slipped away dramatically in the seventh inning. Pitcher Eduard Bazardo gave up a pivotal three-run homer to George Springer, shifting the momentum and sealing the Mariners’ fate. “I hate to use the word failure, but it’s a failure,” said Seattle star Cal Raleigh. “What we expected was to get to the World Series and win a World Series.”
The Mariners had an opportunity to bring the World Series to the Pacific Northwest for the first time, having achieved their first AL West title since 2001. But the loss in Toronto marked a devastating end to a season filled with promise. “Obviously, it hurts,” said center fielder Julio Rodríguez. “That’s also part of the game, too.”
Seattle initially took the lead in the first inning, with Rodríguez doubling and scoring on Josh Naylor‘s single. After falling behind, they rallied to lead 3-1 in the third inning when Rodríguez hit his fourth postseason homer, followed by Raleigh’s fifth postseason homer in the fifth. However, the team failed to secure any hits in the final four innings.
Manager Dan Wilson expressed regret over the outcome but stood by his decision to bring in Bazardo. “You make your decisions, and sometimes you have to live and die with it,” he stated. “It just didn’t go our way.” The Mariners were unable to capitalize on their earlier success, striking out in the ninth inning against Jeff Hoffman to end their season.
This loss is particularly painful for a team that had never advanced past Game 6 until this year. “All of us now have had a taste of how close we can get and how good this team can be,” Wilson remarked. “That’s what you’re shooting for again next year.”
With the Mariners’ season over, attention now turns to the offseason. Fans are left wondering what changes might be made as the team looks to build on this year’s near-miss and finally secure their place in the World Series. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are headed to their first World Series since 1993, showcasing the high stakes of postseason baseball.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Mariners regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead.
