NYCFC Faces Scoring Drought Ahead of Crucial Playoff Opener
URGENT UPDATE: New York City FC is set to confront a significant scoring drought as they enter the MLS Cup playoffs against Charlotte FC on October 3, 2023. This critical first-round matchup will kick off a best-of-three series, raising immediate concerns about the team’s performance.
As New York City FC prepares for Game 1, all eyes are on star players Alonso Martínez and Hannes Wolf, who combined for an impressive 28 goals this season, representing half of the team’s total goals. However, their recent struggles have raised alarms among fans and analysts alike, especially with NYCFC managing only four goals in their last four matches. This includes a solitary victory against the Red Bulls on September 27, where three of those goals were scored.
Martínez, who netted 17 goals this season, has not scored in his last three games. Wolf, too, has been quiet since the September 17 win over Columbus. Despite these challenges, Martínez remains unfazed. “It’s just been the last few games that I haven’t been able to score,” he stated through an interpreter, attributing his struggles to a hectic schedule and his recent commitments with the Costa Rican national team. “Before that, I went on a streak of scoring in five matches. Not too worried about that; the goals will come.”
Head Coach Pascal Jansen seems to echo this sentiment, downplaying the scoring slump and emphasizing the need for the entire team to step up. “You always will have one or two top targets who make your goals in every team. Our team is no different,” Jansen noted. He highlighted the importance of generating goals from set pieces and having wingers contribute more effectively.
Looking ahead, Jansen stressed the strategic significance of scoring first in the playoff game. “The first goal mentality is something that is part of our strategy in general. It will determine a lot how the game flows,” he explained.
New York City FC will aim to rewrite history by securing their first-ever win against Charlotte on the road. They will face a Charlotte FC squad missing star player Wilfried Zaha, who is serving a one-game suspension after two yellow cards in the final match of the regular season. Despite some concerns regarding Wolf’s fitness, he traveled with the team to Charlotte and is not listed on the injury report.
As the clock ticks down to the playoff opener, NYCFC fans are hopeful that their key players can break free from their scoring drought and lead the team to victory. The stakes have never been higher as the MLS playoffs commence.
