Off-Price Retailers Announce 2,110 New Store Openings for 2026
UPDATE: Off-price retail giants TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Burlington are set to launch a staggering 2,110 new store openings in 2026, marking a significant expansion that will create countless new jobs. This news comes just as officials at The TJX Companies announced plans that could reshape the retail landscape.
These ambitious growth plans will exceed previous corporate expectations and reflect a robust confidence in the off-price market. Currently, there are 5,000 stores in operation under the TJX umbrella, and the company is targeting a total of 7,000 locations globally. The specific distribution of these new locations among TJX’s brands—including HomeGoods, Homesense, and Sierra—has not yet been disclosed.
Authorities report that recent developments have seen at least six TJX stores break ground in states including Kansas, Ohio, Mississippi, New York, and Washington over the past two months. While it remains unclear if these sites will contribute to the upcoming 2,110 openings, the expansion signals a strong commitment to value and variety in retail.
In a recent earnings call, TJX executives emphasized that the company continues to prioritize consumer needs, which has led to the decision to push beyond the previously projected 1,300 new locations for the same year, announced in May 2024.
Meanwhile, Burlington is also ramping up its expansion efforts, aiming to open a minimum of 110 new stores in 2026, bolstered by its acquisition of 45 old Joann leases. This strategic move follows Joann’s bankruptcy closure of all U.S. locations in May. Burlington’s Chief Financial Officer, Kristin Wolfe, expressed confidence in the company’s growth trajectory, stating, “This is a modest step up from our original plan of 100 net new stores. These incremental sites really give us confidence in sustaining the high level of growth next year.”
As of last month, Burlington has opened 73 new locations this third quarter, although it also closed 18 stores in November. This brings the total number of Burlington stores in the U.S. to 1,211. Wolfe mentioned that while it is too early to discuss plans for 2027, the long-term outlook remains promising.
With these significant plans for expansion, the off-price retail sector is poised for transformation. Consumers can expect new shopping opportunities in 2026, as these retailers continue to adapt to market demands and expand their footprints.
As developments unfold, all eyes will be on the retail sector to see how these new openings will affect local economies and job markets. Stay tuned for more updates on this rapidly changing story.
