Utes Gear Up for High-Stakes Clash with #17 Cincinnati
UPDATE: The University of Utah Utes are primed for a critical showdown against the #17 Cincinnati Bearcats this Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 8:15 PM at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Following a stunning 53-7 victory over Colorado, head coach Kyle Whittingham expressed confidence in his team’s performance, citing “all positives” from the game.
The Utes’ defense was relentless, recording seven sacks and limiting Colorado to under 150 yards of offense. Byrd Ficklin, who stepped in for the injured Devon Dampier, showcased his talents by rushing for 151 yards and scoring one touchdown, while also throwing for two touchdowns. His performance earned him the title of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
“My phone was blowing up,” Ficklin said about his first start and subsequent win. “I was just enjoying the win with my teammates. They were really happy to get that win at home.” Despite the accolades, Ficklin remains grounded. “I can’t let my head get too big or it will be deflated quick on a college field.”
The question now looms: who will take the field as the starting quarterback against Cincinnati? “Dampier is certainly feeling better each day,” Whittingham stated. “But we’ll just have to see how he progresses. If he’s not ready, then we know Byrd is ready to go again.”
Adding to the excitement, ESPN’s College GameDay will return to Utah for the sixth time, a notable event for the Utes. However, history shows that in three of the last four visits, the Utes have faced defeats. Whittingham is undeterred by the potential distractions. “Those shows do a good job of not really being a distraction for your guys,” he remarked. “It’s good for the program.”
With a record of (6-2, 3-2 Big 12), the Utes are looking to capitalize on the momentum from their recent victory. Cincinnati, boasting a strong (7-1, 5-0 Big 12) record, is expected to present a formidable challenge.
As Saturday approaches, fans and players alike are gearing up for what promises to be an electrifying encounter. The stakes are high, and both teams will be fighting for supremacy in the Big 12.
Stay tuned for updates as the Utes continue their preparations for this pivotal matchup against Cincinnati.
