The Nanticoke area is gearing up for a series of festive events aimed at bringing the community together as the holiday season approaches. Starting on November 29, 2025, the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church will host a Christmas fundraiser featuring a variety of homemade foods and gently used holiday items.

Fundraiser at Transfiguration of Our Lord

The church hall, located at 240 Center St. in Nanticoke, will open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, November 29, and December 6. Attendees can enjoy traditional dishes such as pierogis served with butter and onions, clam chowder, haluski, whimpies, and potato pancakes, available for dining in or taking out. Additionally, the fundraiser will feature gently used Christmas trees, lights, ornaments, toys, furniture, blankets, and various holiday items for sale.

Raffle tickets for a basket drawing will be available at $5 for 11 chances, providing an opportunity to win a selection of prizes. This event not only supports the church but also promotes local traditions and community engagement.

Breakfast and Tree Lighting Events

The Glen Lyon Legion will host a Hunters Breakfast on November 30, 2025, from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 539 Hall, located at 62 Newport St. The breakfast costs $15 per person and includes scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon, sausage, buttered biscuits, and baked goods provided by TND Desserts and More. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP early by calling 570-592-4251.

Later that day, the Newport Township Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Wanamie Municipal Building. The event will include children’s crafts, cookies, hot chocolate, and caroling, along with food trucks. Santa Claus is set to arrive on a fire truck, ready to hear children’s Christmas wishes, making it a magical occasion for families.

Weekly and Monthly Community Activities

For those looking for more community engagement, West Side Playground will host bi-monthly bingo sessions. Doors open at 5 p.m. with games starting at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The next session is scheduled for December 2, at the association’s hall, located at 389 W. Grand St. Participants can enjoy food, refreshments, and door prizes in a non-smoking environment. For more information, call 570-905-0524.

The American Legion Post 350 will also hold bingo nights, starting at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. The next event will take place on December 10, with the kitchen open from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for those looking to grab a meal.

Food distribution efforts in the area are coordinated by the Newport Township Community Organization in partnership with the Weinberg Regional Food Bank. A monthly outdoor, drive-through food distribution is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at the municipal garage on Kirmar Parkway. In instances where the garage is unavailable, distributions will occur at the Wanamie Recreation Park parking lot. Recipients must pre-register at least five days in advance by calling 570-592-7876.

These upcoming events reflect the vibrant spirit of the Nanticoke community, emphasizing togetherness and support as the holiday season unfolds.
