UPDATE: Philadelphia’s Earth Month is set to launch with an exciting lineup of free events designed to engage residents and promote outdoor exploration. Kicking off on April 1, the Fairmount Park Conservancy invites all to participate in activities across the city’s parks, including runs, bird walks, and paddle boating.

The first event, the Trolley Trail Run Club, will take place in West Fairmount Park. This 4.5-mile run will feature multiple pace groups, making it accessible for runners of all speeds. Participants can expect to enjoy the scenic beauty of the historic Trolley Trail as they kick off the month’s festivities.

On April 11, nature enthusiasts can join a guided bird walk during the Second Saturday Hike in East Fairmount Park. Under the guidance of birding instructor Troy Bynum, attendees will explore the Fair Amount Food Forest, learning about local birds and their habitats.

Families are encouraged to head to FDR Park on April 18 for a day of community paddle boating on Edgewood Lake. This unique opportunity allows visitors to pedal across the lake while observing wildlife, including turtles and ducks.

The festivities will continue with ¡Bailar en FDR! on April 24. This salsa class and social dance event will be held at Gateway Plaza in FDR Park, welcoming dancers of all levels. Music will be provided by DJ Valentin from Dance Philly, and attendees can enjoy delicious offerings from Taqueria Morales.

In addition to these engaging activities, several volunteer opportunities are scheduled throughout the month. Workdays on April 11, April 14, and April 15 will focus on planting, gardening, and park cleanup in Lemon Hill, Cobbs Creek Park, and the Belmont Wetlands. A significant volunteer day will also occur on April 22 at the Belmont Plateau, commemorating the site of one of the first Earth Day celebrations in 1970.

These events are not just about enjoying the outdoors; they foster a strong sense of community and environmental stewardship among Philadelphia residents.
