Stephen Curry Leaves Game with Quad Injury, MRI Scheduled
The Golden State Warriors faced a tough setback during their recent game against the Houston Rockets, as star player Stephen Curry exited in the final minute due to a right quad contusion. The injury occurred during a competitive match that ended with the Warriors losing 104-100 at their home arena in San Francisco. An MRI is scheduled to assess the severity of the injury and its potential impact on Curry’s playing time moving forward.
During the fourth quarter, Curry sustained the injury after a series of physical collisions. He was attempting to take a charge against Rockets guard Amen Thompson when he was elbowed, resulting in a blocking foul call against him. A few possessions later, Curry drove into the lane for a layup attempt, but was called for a charge. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr challenged the call, but the decision was upheld. As the game progressed, Curry appeared to be in discomfort, moving gingerly on the court.
With just 35.2 seconds left in the game and the Warriors trailing by five points, Curry consulted with Rick Celebrini, the team’s head medical decision-maker. Following their discussion, it was determined that Curry would not continue, leading to his departure to the locker room. “If Steph has to miss [time], it obviously changes everything,” Kerr stated, highlighting the potential impact on the team’s rotations and overall strategy.
Curry’s injury comes at a challenging moment for the Warriors, who now hold a record of 10-10 after starting the season strongly with a 4-1 record. Following the loss, both Jimmy Butler III of the Rockets and Draymond Green of the Warriors expressed frustration with their teams’ performances. Butler criticized the Warriors’ defensive lapses, stating, “We don’t box out. We let anybody do whatever they want.” Despite the Rockets shooting only 39% from the field, they dominated on the boards, securing 25 offensive rebounds, which proved crucial in the second half where they outscored the Warriors by 16 points.
Green echoed Butler’s sentiments, stating, “Our defense is s—.” Despite the Warriors having a respectable defensive rating of 112.2, which ranks them 10th among all teams, their offensive rating sits at 113.2, placing them 22nd. Green emphasized the importance of team mentality over mere statistics, noting, “Defense is about demeanor. If there’s letdown, it kills your demeanor, it kills your bravado.”
Both Green and Butler have been vocal about their concerns following recent losses. Green addressed individual performance issues, stating, “We are individually…f—ing awful,” while Butler described the team’s inconsistent energy levels, stating, “A lot of our hustle is dictated upon our offense.” He highlighted a tendency to celebrate during good stretches while becoming disheartened during tough moments.
In more positive news for the Warriors, forward Jonathan Kuminga appears close to returning from injury. He participated in a scrimmage on March 15, 2024, and aims to play in the upcoming home game against the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the Warriors’ immediate future remains uncertain, particularly if Curry’s MRI reveals a significant injury. “We’re going to have to be damn near perfect [without Curry],” Butler warned, acknowledging the potential challenges ahead without the team’s star player.
As the Warriors navigate this crucial period, fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring the results of Curry’s MRI and the team’s performance in the coming games.
