Shoppers Fume as Walmart’s Limited Mac & Cheese Box Sells Out Instantly
Walmart shoppers expressed frustration after the retailer’s limited-edition “Mac Friday Box,” featuring 65 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese, sold out within seconds on November 24, 2023. This novelty item, designed to resemble a 65-inch flat-screen television, went live at midnight on the Walmart website and was priced at $19.37, a reference to the year Kraft was founded. The attractive price point meant that each individual box of mac and cheese cost only 30 cents, significantly lower than typical retail prices.
The promotional campaign leading up to the launch featured social media influencers, notably Zach Ciampa from the account “Snack with Zach.” His endorsement helped generate significant buzz around the product. Many customers eagerly prepared for the sale, spending hours waiting on the Walmart website, hoping to secure their order as soon as it became available.
Upon its release, the demand for the Mac Friday Box was overwhelming. Numerous shoppers reported that they had placed the item in their carts only to see it sell out before they could complete their purchase. One frustrated customer recounted, “I literally had it in my cart and it sold out while I was hitting the finish button — what even.” Another shopper lamented their dedication, stating, “I’m so sad, stayed up for this and I literally have to work tomorrow.”
The disappointment was palpable on social media, with many users expressing their anger and disbelief. Comments indicated that few shoppers had successfully completed their purchases, leading to speculation that the item would soon appear on resale platforms at inflated prices. “Sounds like no one in the comment section even got a chance to buy one,” one user remarked. “It’s prob going to resell for hundreds more.”
As of the morning of November 24, a link to the Mac Friday Box on the Walmart website resulted in a message stating, “We couldn’t find this page,” confirming the product’s unavailability. The swift sell-out of this novelty item highlights the growing trend of limited-edition promotions in retail, which often drive consumer excitement but can also lead to widespread disappointment among eager shoppers.
The incident at Walmart serves as a reminder of the challenges retailers face in balancing supply and demand, particularly during high-stakes shopping events like Black Friday. As consumers become more accustomed to online shopping, the competition for popular items is likely to remain fierce.
