Nonprofit organizations in San Antonio and across the United States participated in Giving Tuesday on November 28, 2023, a global initiative aimed at promoting charitable donations. This year, the event comes amid rising demand for services, placing additional pressure on these organizations as they strive to meet the needs of their communities.

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center highlighted a significant need for blood donations, particularly during the holiday season. According to Francine Pina of the center, various factors contribute to this increased demand. “Those needs could be people scheduling surgeries towards the end of the year, childbirth, and there’s also a need for cancer patients, which people don’t realize. Unfortunately, accidents due to travel during the holidays also drive demand,” she explained. This year has seen an uptick in blood needs, which underscores the importance of community involvement beyond financial contributions.

Many nonprofit organizations in San Antonio reported that 2025 has already been a challenging year. With federal budget cuts and shifting grant funding, some programs are at risk as they plan for the future. Rebecca Helterbrand, CEO of Respite Care San Antonio, noted, “It’s important for budgeting and planning purposes, and the percentage of giving from those who have the least amount of funds is the highest.” She emphasized that donations, even small ones, can significantly impact the sustainability of these organizations.

Respite Care San Antonio specifically aids children with disabilities, offering essential childcare services that many families struggle to afford. The organization encourages community volunteering as an alternative way to contribute, fostering engagement that goes beyond monetary donations.

Potential donors are advised to verify the credibility of organizations before contributing. Websites such as Charity Navigator and give.org are recommended resources for checking the legitimacy of charities. Ensuring that donations are going to reputable organizations helps maximize the impact of charitable giving, especially during critical times like Giving Tuesday.

As the holiday season progresses, the ongoing commitment of San Antonio residents to support local nonprofits will be crucial. Each contribution, whether financial or through volunteering, plays a role in helping these organizations continue their vital work in the community.
