San Diego County Increases Park Fees for Second Time This Year

San Diego County is set to increase user fees for various recreational activities starting on January 2, 2024. This marks the second fee adjustment within a year, affecting camping, parking, fishing permits, boating rentals, and sports facilities. For example, the cost of a full hookup campsite will rise from $40 to $42 per night, while booking a picnic area will see an increase of $25 per reservation.

The fee adjustments are part of a two-year plan initiated by the county to address escalating operational costs while maintaining the quality of services offered in its parks and recreational areas. According to county officials, “the changes help us keep pace with rising costs while continuing to provide high-quality parks, trails, and recreation opportunities at a good value when compared to similar park systems.”

Details of the Fee Increases

The upcoming changes include a range of fee hikes that will impact various facilities. For instance, day-use parking fees will remain at $5 after the previous increase from $3 in February. The adjustment plan was the first significant change in over a decade regarding park fees.

Increased fees will also apply to community center set-up costs, rising from $35 to $40 per hour. Specific fee increases will affect facilities at the Fallbrook, Lakeside, and Spring Valley community centers, as well as Valley Center Community Park. Additionally, cabin and caravan-area sites at parks including Agua Caliente, Lake Morena, and Dos Picos County Park will see new rates.

Weddings at county parks will become more expensive as well. The fee for the wedding gazebo at Dos Picos County Park will rise from $250 to $300 per day, while the Felicita Park Wedding Knoll will increase from $400 to $450 for ceremonies, and from $800 to $900 for receptions. Private boat launches will see a fee increase from $10 to $12, and adult fishing permits will increase from $7 to $8.

Impact on Current Reservations and Discounts

Reservations that have already been booked and paid for before January 2 will be honored at the current rates, even if the reservation date falls after the fee change. Users should note that any fees not paid at the time of booking will be charged at the new rates post-January 2. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance, allowing users some flexibility in planning.

Despite these increases, the county maintains that its parks continue to offer exceptional value, citing thousands of free programs available each year across over 150 facilities spanning 59,000 acres of parks, campgrounds, sports parks, community centers, open space preserves, and historic sites. Discounts will remain in place for nonprofits, veterans, seniors, and groups, along with scholarships for programs and the free First Time Camping Program.

As the county enacts these adjustments, it aims to balance the need for increased funding with its commitment to providing accessible and high-quality recreational opportunities for all residents and visitors.
