St. Paul Minister Donates Holiday Coloring Books to Women in Shelters
A St. Paul minister and artist, Peggy Pugh, is on a mission to bring joy to women in local shelters this holiday season by donating coloring books aimed at promoting relaxation and creativity. Pugh has designed the “Rest & Color Coloring Book for Women: Christmas Edition” and aims to distribute 100 copies, complete with coloring tools, by December 5, 2025. So far, she has secured sponsorship for 53 sets and is appealing to the community for additional support.
Pugh’s initiative stems from her own childhood experiences. At just three years old, she discovered the calming effects of coloring amidst family turmoil. “Coloring is very healing,” she stated, recognizing that many women in shelters face significant challenges and may find solace in simple activities.
She emphasizes the contrasting narratives surrounding the holiday season, pointing out that while many celebrate with family and gifts, others face loneliness and uncertainty. “Some people don’t know where their family members are, or their family members have given up on them,” Pugh explained. Her goal is to provide a moment of peace for those who might otherwise feel forgotten during the festive period.
Sharing the Gift of Creativity
At 72 years old, Pugh’s creative journey has included various ventures, from raising children to launching jewelry lines. Despite a busy life, she finds tranquility in coloring, believing that it can offer similar benefits to others, especially women escaping difficult situations.
Pugh noted that many women have never experienced coloring as adults. “Some see a coloring book and think, ‘Oh, no, this is great for children, but this isn’t for adults,’” she remarked. Her book aims to challenge that perception by inviting women to explore their creativity.
Her personal background has influenced her views on rest and self-worth. Having grown up in an abusive household, Pugh learned the importance of taking time for oneself. A stroke at the age of 22 served as a turning point in her life, prompting her to advocate for self-care. “Rest brings restoration to your mind and your body,” she said, underscoring the importance of recognizing one’s own value.
In addition to the coloring book, Pugh recently published “Rest Is A Weapon: Winning Spiritual Battles From A Place of Rest,” which encourages readers to cultivate the discipline of rest in their lives.
How to Help and the Impact of Giving
The “Rest & Color Coloring Book” contains a variety of holiday-themed illustrations, including nutcrackers, snowflakes, and snowmen, alongside images that hold personal significance for Pugh, including representations of Jesus. She intentionally included illustrations of Black women, reflecting the diversity of experiences among women in shelters.
Each coloring book, along with a set of colored pencils, is available for $15 through Pugh’s website, rrpeggypugh.com. Individual copies can also be purchased for $10. Pugh encourages individuals to consider forgoing a small gift for themselves to support this cause, reinforcing the message that every woman deserves to feel valued and cared for.
Pugh hopes that by providing these coloring books, recipients will realize they are not forgotten. “I want to lift the spirits of some women,” she said, emphasizing that each gift serves as a reminder of their worth during the holiday season.
In the near future, Pugh plans to expand her offerings with coloring books tailored for men and themed around various occasions, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month. Through her creative endeavors, she continues to advocate for rest and healing, aiming to make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need.
