Gitana Team Launches Record-Breaking 104-Foot Trimaran

The Gitana Team has unveiled the highly anticipated Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, a 104-foot trimaran designed to challenge offshore sailing speed records. The new vessel, launched in Lorient, France, is projected to be 10 to 15% faster than any other sailboat of its kind, promising to revolutionize the world of competitive sailing.

At the launch event, Ariane de Rothschild, a prominent figure in the Gitana Team, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “Within my family, we’ve always enjoyed a passion for competition, performance, and also one of technological disruption.” She emphasized the team’s commitment to innovation and risk management, which has been integral to the trimaran’s development since the project commenced in 2017.

The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is equipped with cutting-edge technology aimed at enabling the vessel to “fly” above the water, a feat never before accomplished by a raceboat over such long distances. The design incorporates revolutionary Y-foils inspired by America’s Cup technology, which are engineered to generate significant lift, minimize drag, and optimize performance across various sailing conditions.

The trimaran features unique U-shaped rudders designed to enhance control and reduce cavitation, alongside a high-lift centerboard that distinguishes it from other offshore racing vessels. Additionally, the rig of the trimaran allows for the mast to be bent while sailing, enabling the crew to adjust the mainsail’s power dynamically.

Skipper Charles Caudrelier highlighted the ambitious goals for the trimaran, stating, “With this new boat, we hope to achieve as close to perfect flight as possible. Ideally, we’ll be able to fly very high without ever touching the waves.” His aspirations include reaching average sailing speeds of nearly 40 knots, even in challenging conditions with waves reaching up to three meters.

This innovative vessel not only boasts impressive specifications but also features an eye-catching design created by artists Florian and Michaël Quistrebert in collaboration with the Palais de Tokyo. The overall aesthetic adds to the impression of speed and agility, even when the trimaran is stationary.
