Wild Suffer Defeat in Vancouver After Costly Second Period

The Minnesota Wild faced a disappointing 4-2 defeat against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night, marking their second consecutive loss. Rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt, who had been performing impressively this season, experienced a challenging second period, allowing three goals that ultimately cost his team the game. This was Wallstedt’s first regulation loss of the season, bringing his record to 8-1-2 as a starter.

The game started favorably for the Wild, with Mats Zuccarello assisting Matt Boldy for the opening goal just after a penalty kill. This marked Boldy’s 16th goal of the season. Zuccarello’s assist was significant, as it was his 242nd with the Wild, moving him into fourth place in the franchise’s all-time records, ahead of Pierre-Marc Bouchard.

Despite a strong start, the momentum shifted in the second period. After a lengthy review, Vancouver’s Aatu Raty initially appeared to have tied the game, but the goal was disallowed due to a kicking motion. The Canucks did manage to equalize later in the period with a goal from rookie defenseman Tom Willander, who scored his first career goal. The situation escalated when Wallstedt misplayed a puck behind the net, allowing Vancouver to stretch their lead to 4-1.

The Wild attempted to rally in the third period. With Wallstedt on the bench during a power play, Zuccarello scored, narrowing the gap to 4-2 in the closing minutes. Canucks goalie Nikita Tolopilo made 27 saves, helping Vancouver secure their first victory after a four-game winless streak.

This defeat is particularly notable as it marks only the third time this season that the Wild have lost back-to-back games in regulation, and the first such occurrence since October 25. The Wild’s next challenge comes on April 2, 2024, when they face the Canucks again at Grand Casino Arena, before concluding their four-game western road trip against the Seattle Kraken on Monday. The opening faceoff in Seattle is set for 9 p.m. CT.

Additionally, the Wild welcomed back rookie center Danila Yurov, who had missed the previous two games due to a lower body injury. Yurov returned to the lineup as the center on the top line, displacing Ben Jones, who sat as a healthy scratch. The team will look to regain their form and improve their performance as they continue their season.
