Fame Ijeboi, the second-leading rusher for the Minnesota Gophers, has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal when it opens on January 2, 2025. This decision follows a successful redshirt freshman season during which Ijeboi, hailing from Folcroft, Pennsylvania, accumulated 461 yards from 97 carries and scored two touchdowns over the course of 11 games.

Ijeboi’s increased playing time came as a result of injuries to starter Darius Taylor, who is set to enter his senior season in 2026. Taylor led the team in rushing last year with 572 yards on 119 carries and three touchdowns, although he missed three games and faced limitations in others due to injury. Ijeboi stepped into a more prominent role during this time, demonstrating significant potential.

Since the conclusion of the regular season, a total of ten Gophers players have declared their intentions to enter the transfer portal. Ijeboi stands out as one of the most notable contributors expressing interest in leaving the program.

As the Gophers prepare for the upcoming season, they also anticipate the return of tailback A.J. Turner. Turner, a transfer from Marshall, had been a key player before suffering a season-ending injury during a game against California on September 14. Prior to his injury, Turner recorded 16 carries for 64 yards and one touchdown.

Looking ahead, the Gophers’ incoming class features three running backs, including four-star recruit Ryan Estrada from El Paso, Texas. He is joined by three-star prospects Zeke Bates from Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Niko Castillo from Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania.

Additionally, senior backup Cam Davis, a transfer from Washington, will exhaust his eligibility after this season. He contributed 34 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns throughout the regular season. True freshman Grant Washington also made his mark, adding 21 carries for 133 yards, primarily in less competitive matchups. Notably, fellow true freshman Tre Berry departed the program in November, while true freshman Xavier Ford remains with the team.

As the Gophers navigate this transitional phase, the decisions of players like Ijeboi could significantly impact the team’s future dynamics and performance on the field.
