The San Jose Sharks are set to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday at Scotiabank Arena, with significant changes to their lineup. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic will start his third consecutive game, while defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin returns to action after a ten-day absence. This matchup occurs as the Sharks look to rebound from a challenging stretch, aiming to avoid their fourth loss in five games.

Nedeljkovic stepped in for Yaroslav Askarov, who was sidelined by an illness during the Sharks’ recent match against the Philadelphia Flyers, which ended in a 4-1 defeat. The goalie managed to stop 26 of 29 shots during that game. Askarov traveled from Philadelphia to Toronto on Wednesday and will serve as Nedeljkovic’s backup. This season, Nedeljkovic boasts a record of 4-6-2 and a save percentage of .899. Askarov may see action on Sunday when the Sharks conclude their five-game road trip against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Mukhamadullin last played on December 1, when the Sharks secured a 6-3 victory over the Utah Mammoth. He was close to returning on Tuesday but was ultimately scratched as Timothy Liljegren played despite a lower-body injury. In practice on Wednesday, Mukhamadullin was paired with Mario Ferraro. In 14 games this season, he has tallied one goal and four assists, averaging 16:29 in ice time primarily in a second or third defense pair role.

Thrun’s Debut and Reaves’ Reflections

On the other side of the ice, former Sharks defenseman Henry Thrun is making his Maple Leafs debut. Thrun addressed the media, stating the importance of proving himself every night in the league. The Sharks traded Thrun to the Maple Leafs in July in exchange for forward Ryan Reaves. After clearing waivers in October, Thrun played for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, where he recorded nine points in 19 games. His recall comes as the Leafs deal with injuries to defensemen Brandon Carlo, Chris Tanev, and Dakota Mermis.

“It’s super exciting, obviously,” Thrun expressed about returning to the NHL. “Toronto is the biggest hockey market in the world, so to be able to get a chance to represent the NHL team here is pretty special.”

Reaves, who met with reporters on Thursday, reflected on his departure from the Leafs. “They basically said that I couldn’t play in this league anymore,” he commented at Scotiabank Arena. He is currently in the second year of a three-year, $4.05 million contract. Last season, he was healthy scratched 15 times over 42 games and ultimately placed on waivers in March before being assigned to the AHL.

Reaves acknowledged that communication could have been handled better during his time with the Leafs. “I think throughout the year, not just that situation, there were other situations that could have been handled differently,” he said. “At the time, I had been in the league for 15 years, and just a little honesty and communication would have been nice.”

Despite the challenges, Reaves expressed contentment with his current role in San Jose. “I ended up in a great organization in San Jose, and I’m having a great time playing there,” he remarked.

Coaching Perspectives

Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube, who played a similar role in his own 17-year career, shared his respect for Reaves. “I’ve known Reavo for a long time,” Berube noted. “I think Reavo’s had a great career, in terms of what he does and his role as a player. Things happen; that’s just the way the game goes. You get a little older, get towards the end of your career. I went through it; I totally understand where he’s at and what he thinks.”

As both teams prepare for this matchup, the focus will be on performance and resilience. The Sharks aim to turn their recent fortunes around, while the Maple Leafs will look to integrate Thrun into their lineup effectively. The game promises to be a compelling encounter as both teams navigate their respective challenges in the season.
