Cliff Richard Reveals Prostate Cancer Battle, Advocates for Screening

Cliff Richard, the renowned British singer, has disclosed that he has been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer for the past year. At 85 years old, Richard stated that his cancer is currently in remission, but he is advocating for a national screening program to better detect the disease among men.

In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Richard explained his journey since receiving the diagnosis, which came during a routine health check related to an insurance requirement ahead of his concert tour in Australia and New Zealand. He emphasized the importance of early detection, saying, “I don’t know whether it’s going to come back. We can’t tell those sort of things but we need to – absolutely. I’m convinced: get there, get tested, get checked.”

Richard expressed relief that his cancer was not advanced, noting, “The good fortune was that it was not very old; and the other thing is that it has not metastasised. Nothing had moved into bones or anything like that.” His comments highlight the urgency of proactive health checks, particularly for older men.

Call for National Screening Program

The singer criticized the absence of a national screening program in the UK, labeling it as “absolutely ridiculous.” He argued that every individual deserves access to screening and early treatment. “We have governments to look after our country and those who live in that country, so I can’t see how you can say: ‘Oh, we can do this, we can do that, but we don’t do this for these people,’” Richard stated.

His advocacy aligns with recent developments from the UK National Screening Committee, which in November 2023 issued a draft recommendation for a targeted prostate cancer screening program. If implemented, this initiative would invite men aged 45 to 61, who carry genetic mutations of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, to undergo screenings every two years.

Richard expressed strong support for this program, urging the government to listen to public demand for improved health services. He remarked, “We all deserve to have the same ability to have a test and then start treatments really early.”

Joining Forces with the Royal Family

In light of his own experience, Richard has also indicated a willingness to collaborate with others to raise awareness about prostate cancer. He referenced King Charles, who announced that his cancer treatment would be reduced in the new year. Richard suggested that if the King is willing to take a leading role in this initiative, many would be eager to join the cause.

“I’ve been involved with many charities over the years, and if the King is happy to front it for us, I’m sure loads of people – I certainly would join him… If the King is listening, I think most of us would say: ‘Yeah, we’re available,’” Richard said.
